What names do you think are due for a big rise in popularity over the next few years?

I think the current trend for 'old lady' and 'old man' names will die out and names from the 50s will start to come back. We've already seen, on this forum, the renewed popularity of 'Audrey' and I suspect names like Gillian, Jennifer, Pamela, Cecilia and Susan will become more popular. Similar for boys - I think there will be lots of Stephens, Colins and Erics running around the park.

Pasiphae · 26/05/2010 13:11

Ava and Lucas, maybe...

NiceCuppaT · 26/05/2010 13:30

Colin, Eric, Susan and Pamela??? really?

I think names 'we' went to school with will regain popularity - Claire, John, Sarah, Emma, Mark, Robert, Joanna etc...

swanandduck · 26/05/2010 13:41

I posted on Pamela recently and quite a lot of people like it.
Likewise, I am amazed at the number of people who like Audrey as I would think of that as a middle aged name.

I think names we went to school with will regain popularity with our children but not with us because, having grown up with them, we'll think them boring. I am expecting to have grandchildren called Michelle, Debbie, Brian and Gerard .

withorwithoutyou · 26/05/2010 13:47

I'm also amazed at the Audrey lovers.

My friend's middle name is Audrey and we always used to take the mickey out of her for it at school (still do a bit in fact).

5DollarShake · 26/05/2010 13:57

I think a few people will toy with middle-aged-chic, but I really don't think there is going to be a massive revival, with names like Linda, Barbara, Stephen and Brian reaching the heady popularity heights of Jack and Olivia.

Everyone seems to be into flower names, old-lady/man names and diminutives (Charlie, Archie, Alfie, Daisy) - I think they still have a while to run (don't like any of them myself), and of course names like Isabelle/a, Ava and Grace are doing the rounds at the minute.

mopsyflopsy · 26/05/2010 14:20

I think every generation is looking for 'new' names, so I don't think that 'boring' names (to our ears) that we grew up with (Clare, Stephen etc) will become popular as long as we're in charge of choosing names .

Our children, however, being bored of all the Jacks, Graces and Charlies, will probably find these current middle aged names very 'cool' and different again. Our grandchildren will probably be called Brian and Michelle .

So I think the 'old' names (to our generation's ears) will remain popular for a while still, so I think names like Florence, Iris, Albert, Quentin, etc. will continue to rise in popularity.

BottleOfRum · 26/05/2010 14:34

Lily/Daisy/Rose/Ruby/Grace will be the new Olivia

and

Archie/Alfie/Charlie etc will be the new Jack methinks

swanandduck · 26/05/2010 14:53

Have those names not already arrived? My area is crawling with them (although I still think Daisy is a fabulous name.)

BettyButterknife · 26/05/2010 16:36

I have a strong feeling that Theo and Noah are the new Jack.

lifeas3plus1 · 26/05/2010 18:40

Stanley and maggie

LiquoriceLila · 26/05/2010 21:19

Nancy seems to be the new Olivia round where i live.

CrankyTwanky · 26/05/2010 21:44

Clive and Margaret.

(my folks)

LuluF · 27/05/2010 14:14

LiquoriceLila - Where-ish in the country are you? We have a Nancy and so far, I've only met 2 in 4 years - we're in the East of England.

zozzle · 27/05/2010 14:44

Theo, Oscar, Noah (not keen)

Not so sure about the girls

Then, I agree, maybe a resurgence of 50s and 60s names such as Susan, Steffie etc

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/05/2010 14:45

Evie and Charlie
Lexie and Beau

A teacher at my children's school just called her baby Steven. So maybe you're on to something there.

lilolilmanchester · 28/05/2010 00:14

Florence & Fred

KatiePooh · 28/05/2010 00:31

Not sure about the 'new names' but my DH wanted Heather for our DD name 4 years ago ... needless to say I hit him over the head with a frying pan an when he eventually regained consciousness I told him it was a 35year olds name only & never to bring that one up again .. this by the way was his only contribution for the girls names - he just wouldn't budge!
Heather is now his name for his 'sympathy belly' he pokes out when taking the micheal out of me at the moment!!
Please no-one feel sorry for him though, as this time round, he's getting to name our DS due in September and has chosen a name I'll be proud to call out in the supermarket!!
Still love all the old style names though and hope they'll be around for generations to come.

mrsgportishead · 29/05/2010 14:32

Freddie and Florence, how cute!
