I really like this name, and the nns Vicky or Tor. But when I mentioned it to my sister in law she made a face and said I had to be joking. What do other people think?

I like Victoria but loathe Tor as a nn. Don't mind most of the other though - but probably you should pay most attention to the ladies who are called Victoria!

I like Victoria but not Vicky or Vix...reminds me of Vick's, that stuff you rub on your chest when you've got a cold. Tori is okay but I prefer the full name. HTH!

I love being called Victoria (although prefer my middle name - Charlotte), it's a good name that is classic but not over-popular. I am called either Vic/Vics/Victoria and like all of those nn. I went through a spell of introducing myself as Vicky in my early 20's, when Victoria seemed a bit formal, but that didn't last long, and now no one calls me that now. It's a great name, do it!

DS would have been Victoria if he'd been a girl, but by the time DD came along DH had gone off the name and DD just didn't look like a Victoria anyway.

Like the suggestions of Tori/Vita, all the Victoria's I know are lovely, so no problems with it. It's traditional and classic but that is not bad

I'm another Victoria - it is a bit formal and I shorten it with friends, but it suits me (or is it nominative determinism and I grew to suit the name?).

I was also Vicky at school, but grew out of it in my early 20s - helped by the Batman quote where Catwoman asks if Vicky Vale is "an icedancer or an air hostess". Didn't know Vita was a nn for Victoria, damn, I would have gone with that for sure, very cool!

Victoria was my pretend name when I was growing up. Like it, but not the nicknames of Tor or Tori. Glad I now know that Tor means Gate in German

You could always introduce yourself to new people as Vita.

I once new someone with a very ordinary name who changed his name by deed poll in his 30s to... wait for it...

mimimomma and vicar - maybe we should start a facebook group for people called Victoria who wish they knew about the Vita thing. I can certainly feel a pen name coming on....

swanandduck - the other nice thing about Victoria is that it is a proper name and everyone can spell it but there are very few little Victorias around at the moment. I can't think of any at the dcs large primary school where we are awash with Isabellas, Charlottes, and Elizabeths, which I always think of as similar type names. I wonder if your SIL is thinking about Victoria Beckham when she turns her nose up? TBH, I really don't think people make those celeb connections when a name is so classic.

Yuck, I don't like it. Too strong and too long. And Vicky is like Debbie or Sue or Michelle. Nothing wrong it but just not exciting to me at my age!

But I like victor for a boy.

My sister's Victoria but we all call her Toy. Never understood why her husband calls her Plum but I do now!

I'm Victoria and it seems here in Australia that it is much "posher" than it was in the UK

I have always liked it. Was Vicky/Vic in school and still am to all my friends and family, but Victoria at work etc which sounds a bit more professional.

Funny, Magalyzz, I like it precisely because it is "strong and too long"!

I really like the name Victoria. It was on our list for dd2, but my mom put me off it a bit by saying it reminded her of Victoria Beckham

I would have used Kiki or Tilly as a nick name.

I think its a really beautiful, chic and classic name. It has lots of nn's as well.

Victoria is a gorgeous name, really lovely, but I am not too crazy about the nicknames either - especially dislike Vikki etc. Vic and Tori are okay.

Victoria is a lovely name.

But she will get called Vicky because people are lazy. Vicky IMO sounds common.

Tis my name, i get called Vic or Vicki, Never been called Victoria in my life so would just be weird now.
