I really like this name, and the nns Vicky or Tor. But when I mentioned it to my sister in law she made a face and said I had to be joking. What do other people think?

I like Victoria but loathe Tor as a nn. Don't mind most of the other though - but probably you should pay most attention to the ladies who are called Victoria!

CheerfulYank · 26/05/2010 02:05

I like Victoria but not Vicky or Vix...reminds me of Vick's, that stuff you rub on your chest when you've got a cold. Tori is okay but I prefer the full name. HTH!

mimimomma · 26/05/2010 07:06

I love being called Victoria (although prefer my middle name - Charlotte), it's a good name that is classic but not over-popular. I am called either Vic/Vics/Victoria and like all of those nn. I went through a spell of introducing myself as Vicky in my early 20's, when Victoria seemed a bit formal, but that didn't last long, and now no one calls me that now. It's a great name, do it!

NorbertTheNutjob · 26/05/2010 07:12

DS would have been Victoria if he'd been a girl, but by the time DD came along DH had gone off the name and DD just didn't look like a Victoria anyway.

sedgiebaby · 26/05/2010 08:42

Like the suggestions of Tori/Vita, all the Victoria's I know are lovely, so no problems with it. It's traditional and classic but that is not bad

flopsy1974 · 26/05/2010 09:43

A good solid name. But the shortened versions would put me off.

wilbur · 26/05/2010 09:50

I'm another Victoria - it is a bit formal and I shorten it with friends, but it suits me (or is it nominative determinism and I grew to suit the name?).

I was also Vicky at school, but grew out of it in my early 20s - helped by the Batman quote where Catwoman asks if Vicky Vale is "an icedancer or an air hostess". Didn't know Vita was a nn for Victoria, damn, I would have gone with that for sure, very cool!

swanandduck · 26/05/2010 10:22

Vita is gorgeous.
Thanks for the feedback. I will let sis in law no that Victoria has official Mumsnet approval.

Wilbur..I to am cheesed off about the Vita thing, what a cool nn. Is it too late to introduce it at 31?!

whatwasthatagain · 26/05/2010 15:33

Victoria was my pretend name when I was growing up. Like it, but not the nicknames of Tor or Tori. Glad I now know that Tor means Gate in German

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/05/2010 15:36

or 38?

liking Vita....

LuluF · 26/05/2010 15:42

You could always introduce yourself to new people as Vita.

I once new someone with a very ordinary name who changed his name by deed poll in his 30s to... wait for it...

Cisco Horsetrough

So I'm sure Vita is do-able.

simpson1 · 26/05/2010 18:50

Wouldn't there be Ryvita jokes though?

wilbur · 27/05/2010 12:54

mimimomma and vicar - maybe we should start a facebook group for people called Victoria who wish they knew about the Vita thing. I can certainly feel a pen name coming on....

swanandduck - the other nice thing about Victoria is that it is a proper name and everyone can spell it but there are very few little Victorias around at the moment. I can't think of any at the dcs large primary school where we are awash with Isabellas, Charlottes, and Elizabeths, which I always think of as similar type names. I wonder if your SIL is thinking about Victoria Beckham when she turns her nose up? TBH, I really don't think people make those celeb connections when a name is so classic.

ThatVikRinA22 · 27/05/2010 22:53

i think i may become a vita....

though i said this to DH last night. asked him if id need to be a blonde bombshell type (im thinking of La Dolce Vita

here

he said "fine, call yourself vita then. but ill still call you vic!"

MagalyZz · 27/05/2010 23:20

Yuck, I don't like it. Too strong and too long. And Vicky is like Debbie or Sue or Michelle. Nothing wrong it but just not exciting to me at my age!

But I like victor for a boy.

Karmann · 27/05/2010 23:33

My sister's Victoria but we all call her Toy. Never understood why her husband calls her Plum but I do now!

Ozziegirly · 28/05/2010 06:59

I'm Victoria and it seems here in Australia that it is much "posher" than it was in the UK

I have always liked it. Was Vicky/Vic in school and still am to all my friends and family, but Victoria at work etc which sounds a bit more professional.

Funny, Magalyzz, I like it precisely because it is "strong and too long"!

cherrylips · 28/05/2010 18:33

Hi!

I really like the name Victoria. It was on our list for dd2, but my mom put me off it a bit by saying it reminded her of Victoria Beckham

I would have used Kiki or Tilly as a nick name.

I think its a really beautiful, chic and classic name. It has lots of nn's as well.

ThatVikRinA22 · 29/05/2010 00:01

DH hates vita....guess i wont be a vita then.

like tilly. why has no one ever come up with these lovely variations for moi!

halfawake · 29/05/2010 18:55

Victoria is a gorgeous name, really lovely, but I am not too crazy about the nicknames either - especially dislike Vikki etc. Vic and Tori are okay.

A1980 · 29/05/2010 22:15

Victoria is a lovely name.

But she will get called Vicky because people are lazy. Vicky IMO sounds common.

Tyson86 · 29/05/2010 22:17

Tis my name, i get called Vic or Vicki, Never been called Victoria in my life so would just be weird now.
