Aurora
Aurelia
Xanthe
Adele

I obviously have a thing for girls names beginning with an A...!

Do people think Xanthe is increasingly popular? I have seen it floating around these discussion boards quite a lot recently.

Help/other suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Prefer Adele by far. Not keen on Xanthe, it's abit too exotic for me, people may wonder how it is pronounced and it seems abit odd to start a name with an X in some ways!

sapell3 · 25/05/2010 14:45

They are all lovely names, but if I had to put them in order of preference

  1. Aurelia
  2. Aurora
  3. Xanthe
  4. Adele (prefer Adela)

I love Xanthe and Aurelia and Aurora are equally nice. Don't like Adele at all and find it v different to your other choices.

brennannbooth · 25/05/2010 14:52

Oh this is tricky as they are all really rather lovely. You need to have more daughters I'm afraid.

EleanorD · 25/05/2010 14:56

Thank you! Agreed Adele is different to the others, I haven't made my mind up about how 'frilly' I'd like the name to be - Adele does seem a bit less frilly than the others.

Hmm some thoughts that possibly might help distinguish between them:
Aurelia could be mistaken for Amelia, which is a little bit more popular at the moment (though also v v nice)

Aurora is the name of the princess in Sleeping Beauty (I think)

Xanthe starts with an X which is just really cool and sophisticated but she could not then have a brother called Xavier, and Xavier is a lovely name that would go nicely with Aurelia. But if you had BBG triplets you could have (Ale)Xander, Xavier and Xanthe and then they would be Triple X and that would make them an exciting crimefighting force or summat

Adele is a bit like Adelaide which is a bit Australian sounding (although still v lovely)

DontWorryBaby · 25/05/2010 15:06

Adele would be my favourite, then Xanthe. I think the other two can be difficult to pronounce, particularly for other children when at toddlers/nursery etc.

EleanorD · 25/05/2010 15:08

Yes!! V.good point - could never have a Xavier, Xander and Xanthe and I do really like both those boys names! Hadn't thought about Aurelia and Amelia. Aurora is indeed the Sleeping Beauty princess - worried that might make it a bit icky (it also means dawn which is nice).

If you like Adele do you also like Della or Delilah?

EleanorD · 25/05/2010 15:15

Unfortunately my surname begins with a D and they wouldn't quite work (Adele is already sailing quite close to the wind with my surname!).

I like Aurelia, Xanthe and Adele, but dislike Aurora (too 'Disney' for me).

I like Adela too. And there's the Irish-y Edel.

BrigitteBardot · 25/05/2010 16:30

Adele is lovely.

brennannbooth · 25/05/2010 17:29

To be fair, Sleeping Beauty is the best Disney princess though, back when Disney cartoons were individually painted frame by frame and the music was good.

janeite · 25/05/2010 17:35

Have you had this thread before? The lst looks familiar. If yes, I still think Adele is the only nice one. If no, I apologise - but I only like Adele! Adele is lovely.

aurora is gorgeous IMO - very original and pretty.

NotStressedAtAll · 26/05/2010 00:14

Love, love, love Aurora and Aurelia. I think they are both really beautiful and distinctive. Would have definitely have been on my shortlist but DH vetoed :-(

skidoodly · 26/05/2010 00:21

I think Aurora and Aurelia are more popular than Xanthe.

GladioliBuckets · 26/05/2010 12:57

I like Adele best too, think it's underrated.

Have said it before on the Baby Names board, but I find Aurora unpleasant to say out loud. Just feels really horrible and makes me feel self-conscious. If I had a Scottish accent it would be different though, the r sound is made differently.

EleanorD · 26/05/2010 13:18

Agreed, Aurora said out loud isn't perfect, I think that's why I might prefer Aurelia.
