What do you think of this list of Girls names, needs to sound right in English and French

I need to find a name that sounds good with our surname (DH has a french heritage and all my in-laws are french speaking) that is not too 'exotic' sounding and good in English and in French. For example I can't have Thea (TH is not easy to say for DH)

Middle name is to be Grace (family name)

Other problem is our surname very french not this but a bit like La Roche so , if I'm not careful name will sound like a show girl's. e.g I like Louella and Lulu but Louella Grace La Roche is just too much...isn't it?

I have this so far:

Joelle Grace La
Jolie Grace La
Lowen Grace La
Ellis Grace La
Rachel Grace la
Everly Grace La

Any other ideas please?

Eloise?

Eleonore?

sedgiebaby · 24/05/2010 17:16

withorwithoutyou - yes I quite Eloise and DH doesn't object, it will go on the shortlist!

Excellent. I'm not allowed it

Being easy to say in French is a must for us too (my mum is French).

My dd is Margaret although everyone calls her Daisy, including the French side. Her middle name is Anne.

On our list were things like Arianne or Tabitha (well ok that was my list, dh wouldn't have Tabitha). Hum, trying to think of something else that was on the list..not much! Probably why dd was nameless for a good while then!

Emily is lovely in both French and English. Naomi/Noemi?

sedgiebaby · 24/05/2010 17:46

Oh thank you DYDTOMH, Margaret is cute and also my mums name! Lots of Emily's and Naomi's in my life too but I'll think about Arianne...
The frenglish thing is difficult quel dommage lol!

You cannot call a child "Jolie". What if she grows up terribly plain? Just too cruel.

I think Beatrice is lovely in both languages and neither "fashionable" nor "old-fashioned"

Mandi1984 · 24/05/2010 18:26

I really, really like Beatrice.

frakkit · 24/05/2010 18:45

Cecile?

I don't really like any of your original list.

Small French girls I know are: Felicity, Philomene, Louise, Abigail, Camille, Eva, Laure, Emma, Elodie, Zoe, Natalie, Elena (poss spelt Helena, not seen it written) and Rosanna.

frakkit · 24/05/2010 18:46

Oh and a Lucie. Born 3 weeks ago.

Mandi1984 · 24/05/2010 18:47

I really like Camille too.

I seem to love French names. Should probably start using them for my own DC!

There are an amazing assortment of names listed here

BrigitteBardot · 24/05/2010 20:06

Yes I am French but with close links to the UK.
Cool French names around me at the moment are Calixte
Sixtine
Olympe
Eléonore
Louise
Adèle
Suzanne
Capucine
Colombe

And Rachelle is not very nice in French either. I think it's important that the name is pronounced quite similarly in both languages (personal opinion) and Rachelle in French sounds very harsh. It's just not very nice, sorry.

From the proposed ones, Beatrice is nice, if a bit dull (personal opinion again), Lucie and Camille are lovely.

BettyButterknife · 24/05/2010 20:10

Audrey?

PeachMelba78 · 26/05/2010 11:48

I am half French and between myself and my sisters we are Denise, Carolyn and Lisa as they work with both French and English relations.
For our baby to be we are going with either Coco or Leo - Coco is a nickname for Colette who was my favourite great aunt but my partner doesn't like Colette! So many people don't like Coco but we love it!
Other names are Adrienne, Helen(e), Caroline, Estelle, Eva - there are loads!

Pasiphae · 26/05/2010 13:22

I am full French and I know a catholic Rachelle! (big sis Rébécca).

Joelle is lovely but very dated. Was popular in the 60s.
Jolie in term of French. I would not call my daughter Pretty.
Lowen and Everly are too English, the R of everly would not make the name pretty in French.
Ellis would get mispelt regurlary in whatever language (Alice/Elise), plus it's a boy's name.

Other idea:
(works in both languages)
Celeste, Clementine(teen ending), Cecily/Cicely/Cecilia, Seraphine, Mathilda, Honor, Cerise, Salomé, Amandine, Felicity, Berenice, Garance, Vivienne, Isodara, Ginevra, Octavia, Eglantine, Greta, Astrid, Arianne, Mabel, Domitilla, Elsie, Zelie...-

Emmie Grace La Roche

pointydog · 26/05/2010 22:12

Emmie? Just use Emma as in Bovary

imamissandamummy · 26/05/2010 22:13

thinking famous french ladies with nice names that sound just as well over here as they do france. what about:

Juliette Grace (juliette binoche)
Audrey Grace (audrey tatou)
Laetitia Grace -or an anglicised spelling of this name-(laetitia casta)
Catherine Grace (catherine deneuve)
Anna Grace is also a lovely name that 'translates' well.

Have fun choosing

leonam · 29/05/2010 11:24

I love Mado as a short form of Madeleine
