More boys' names needed!

We have a shortlist and a long time to go (19 weeks) but are stuck on three very distinctive boys' names but probably need more to choose from!

Our requirements are nothing New Testament/Christian and nothing too popular.

So far we have:
Quentin
Avi
Barnaby

BTW we don't know the gender but have plenty of girls' names!

Barnaby is the best on that list. Quentin has a kind of sniggerish undertone to it that I couldn't live with. It's like a parody of effeminate upper-class wannabe name.

Avi is a bit incomplete sounding, and very girly. I would have to say 'sorry can you repeat that?' a couple of times. Do you want him to have a life time of people saying 'what?' when he introduces himself.

Barnaby is the only usable one on your list.

LuluF · 23/05/2010 12:47

Avi is an abbreviated form of Abraham isn't it? I personally don't really think it sounds incomplete, and it's my favourite of the three.

Manda25 · 23/05/2010 17:16

Sorry i never know if a name is religious:

Rory
Glen
Eddie
Felix
Stanley
Titus
Perry
Miles
Casper
Toby
Peirce
Arty
Edwin

Jamieandhismagictorch · 23/05/2010 17:58

Sorry, it's purely my taste, but Quentin and Barnaby sound a bit weak and posh to me. Not "solid" enough

What about

Evan
Asa
Rufus
Marcus
Matthew (know it's new testament, but ...)
Patrick
Hugo

Jamieandhismagictorch · 23/05/2010 17:58

Also

Hector
Victor (nn Vic)

MagalyZz · 23/05/2010 18:58

I love victor. also Donald and Howard which have a similar vibe (imo).

MagalyZz · 23/05/2010 18:59

Marcus is a great roman classic. Love that name as well

eatyourveg · 23/05/2010 19:13

Barnaby is great, Marcus good too. I like Rufus - none of them in the Bible as far as I know

SillyTillyBilly · 24/05/2010 10:05

None of them are quite to my to my taste but Barnaby is definitely my favourite of the three.

sonniebonnie · 24/05/2010 11:07

I love Quentin. It is getting more popular, though, I know two under the age of 5.

Reminds me of Quentin Tarantino or Quentin Blake - hardly weak or posh .

Barnaby nice too, but Avi sounds a bit feminine to my ears.

rachel234 · 24/05/2010 11:33

From your three, I prefer Quentin.

There is a Avi in my ds's school who is of Indian origin - not sure if the name is?

annasophia · 24/05/2010 11:52

I like Barnaby and Quentin.

My ds is Quentin. It suits him perfectly . We sometimes shorten to Quin. Not sure if it is getting more popular but it is very popular in France.

I'm less keen on Avi.

mopsyflopsy · 24/05/2010 12:04

My order of preference of your suggestions would be
Quentin
Barnaby
Avi

I also like Felix, Vincent, Sebastian, although I'm not sure how religious they are.

Effjay · 24/05/2010 12:10

Theo? Theodore?

hellokitty123 · 24/05/2010 13:47

I love Quentin. Very cool (reminds me of Quentin Tarantino).

Barnaby is ok, but I'm not keen on Avi.

Thissideofchannel · 24/05/2010 13:59

I like all 3 of your suggestions. Which one goes best with your surname?

Quentin is indeed very popular in France, it is my (French) nephew's name. I like it.

Barnaby is nice too but won't travel as well into other languages, but that may or may not bother you .

eatyourveg · 24/05/2010 14:10

Theo is about as religious as you can get, comes from the ancient greek for God I think

Thissideofchannel · 24/05/2010 14:19

Good point, eatyourveg, Theo does indeed mean 'god' - e.g. Theo-logy.

Theo is also very popular.

sophiesmummie · 24/05/2010 14:41

Barnaby and Quentin are both lovely. I'm not sure about Avi is ok, but only because I've not heard of it before.

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/05/2010 17:03

I also like Angus, Marcus, Barnaby and Jasper.

LittleMissWorryHead · 24/05/2010 19:44

Do you know what I like? Quinn. Love it. I am done though so you can have it

From your list I prefer Barnaby....

What about Arlo?

janeite · 24/05/2010 19:47

Barnaby - love it. Don't like Avi.

hulabula · 24/05/2010 22:04

Really like Quentin. Quinn would be a nice nickname.

Barnaby is ok, reminds me of the purple dinosaur.

Avi is nice if it has some cultural relevance to you (is it Indian?).
