I'd love to call my child after much loved grandpaterents - but are Joanie and Hughie too old/wierd/cruel?

No, they are sweet. Joanie and Chachi would be even better though

Raahh · 22/05/2010 18:56

I just read that as a Joanne Hughes

That was my maiden name. I am deffo old, dh says not ugly

I like Hughie, not sure about Joan

deaddei · 22/05/2010 18:58

Hughie-Hughie Green in my opinion- a drunken old lech.
Joanie has charm.

ImGonnaCountToThree · 22/05/2010 19:02

Thanks for your comments. It makes the whole name thing much easier - getting an honest outside unbiased opinion face to face is very difficlt.

Once my partner and I make a decision on a name we want to tell the family and not be put off by their alternative suggestions/disgust/indifference/laughter etc.

I once knew an adorable little girl called Joni (after Joni Mitchell), so I like Joannie (but prefer Joni). I really hate Joan though.

Hugh is a good name, could be Hughie when small I suppose, but really I prefer just Hugh.

"Once my partner and I make a decision on a name we want to tell the family and not be put off by their alternative suggestions/disgust/indifference/laughter etc."

If that's what you want then tell them AFTER the baby is born.

ImGonnaCountToThree · 22/05/2010 19:07

Will do! Thanks for advice!

no! not at all. Both quite cute I think.

The kind of name that cool people will realise is cool and everybody else will say bleurgh.

BoldChislers · 22/05/2010 19:32

Joanie very mad men btw. I like it.

I love shuggie which is a nn for hugh, like Podge for Patrick I guess! The connection is tenuous but it's cute.

BitOfFunInTheQuattro · 22/05/2010 19:41

I had an old love of a relative who's name was Hugh, but he was called Bun all his life, which was cute.

InTheZenGarden · 22/05/2010 19:46

If DS were to have been a girl, Joni would have been on my list. Prefer Joni/Joanie as a name, as opposed to calling her Joan but nicknaming her Joanie.

Conversely, I would call a boy Hugh and use Hughie as a nickname.

That makes no sense, but that's how my head works atm!

skidoodly · 22/05/2010 21:55

I feel the same InThe so there must be some sense too it

LiquoriceLila · 23/05/2010 08:44

Joanie is terrible sorry

LuluF · 23/05/2010 09:25

I was in a play park a few weekends ago and there was a girl - about 7 or 8 called Joanie/Joni - and it struck me as a lovely alternative to other names for girls in that age group. Good choice, I think.

pranma · 23/05/2010 14:12

I love the name Joan and you could give her the Abbey books to read when she is older. My ds is guy and m-i-l insisted in calling him Hugh which she said 'is just the same really'!!

Hedwig3 · 24/05/2010 11:11

Fabulous names

I love using family names.

BessieBoots · 24/05/2010 11:13

Ooooh lovely names! I adore the name Jean- it's what DH calls me (it's my nan's name)

whatwasthatagain · 24/05/2010 11:16

Joannie Ok - why not Hugo instead of Hugh?

Hedwig3 · 24/05/2010 11:18

Also agree with telling people only after baby is born!

UniS · 24/05/2010 11:26

Joan fine, Hugh fine, but not joanie as a given name. ie names sound fine for kids but less good for young adults and adults. You can use the ie diminutive anyway if you like while they will tolerate it.

sapell3 · 24/05/2010 11:33

I like Joan. Hugh is OK. Not so keen on the nicknames though.

Hugh is nice. Joanie a bit plain.

seeker · 24/05/2010 14:08

But PLEASE use the proper forms on the birth certificate and use the nicknames - it gives the peson you're naming a choice.

GrumbleBee · 25/05/2010 21:19

Joan is lovely, and Hugh is lovely (personally like it better than Hugo). Yay! Do it!

Also agree that give them the formal version on paper and use Joanie and Hughie as nicknames - keeps all their options open.
