Which of these names is least "a now name"?

Which of these girl's names is least popular at the moment? I.e. not every second person is naming their child it:

Rose
Eve
Juliet
Isabelle
Elizabeth
Josephine

Our surname begins with an "S" so I concerned Rose might run into the surname, otherwise I think this would be my favourite.

Same for boy's names:

Hugo
Isaac
Maxim
Edward
Felix

I don't want to scream "try hard" and at the same time, don't want anything too common and plain...

Thanks!

I think that with the Serbian connection Maxim is good, and if you were to live in the UK probably woudl be fairly unusual. But these things are quite localised, so it makes more sense to consider your local area. If you are actually going to move to Australia then it might make more sense to know what is popular there - it will most likely to very different.

Otherwise I'd say Maxim and probably Juliet, maybe Josephine. But it's very difficult to judge these things. We chose a name we knew was perennially popular for our dd (the long version less so) and something we expected to be fairly unusual for ds. A year or two after he was born it suddenly because both very popular and also very common (frequently listed here as chavvy). In practice we've met other little girls with the same short name as dd, but don't know any, and never come across anyone with ds's name. Oh and now we live in Canada neither are common here.

The moral being choose something that you really like, because you never know

Maxim is a word. It means an established prinicple, or a norm. Does that put you off a little/. Think I prefer Maxwell. I only know of one Maxwell.

LuluF · 20/05/2010 08:15

Maxim is also a name. French for greatest.

BessieBoots · 20/05/2010 11:05

Maxim is a booby mag! A very well-known booby mag at that..

Psammead · 20/05/2010 11:13

I know at least a million Isabelles (because it's a very pretty name) - same with Eve (and variations thereof) and Rose.

Elizabeth on the other hand is a timeless classic, Juliet is lovely and Josephine isn't exactly to my taste, but there wont be a million of them, and it's still nice with some good NN possibilities.

I think Felix is getting quite popular, and Edward is a mainstay of boys' names. Hugo isn't my cup of tea. Maxim is quite cool, Isaac is lovely.

Out of all your names, there are some that I wouldn't choose personally, but there are none that I actually dislike! Nice choices.

Psammead · 20/05/2010 11:17

Sorry, meant to add, I would personally go with Elizabeth and Felix (despite it's popularity).

OP - there is nothing wrong with Maxim, btw!

readerholic · 22/05/2010 13:24

I really like Maxim - Max is a lovely shortened name

Eliza as a shortened version of Elizabeth is not heard too much these days and always reminds me of Pride and Prejudice - good strong name.

hocuspontas · 22/05/2010 13:38

Yes Maxwell nicer. And Julia, Josefa, Evelyn, Edwin, Hugh. Slight variations but less popular.

Clary · 22/05/2010 13:40

Max is v v popular in my neck of the woods. I know about eight aged 4-7yo.

I don't know if any are called Maxim (one is certainly Maxwell) but all Maxim/Maximilian/Maximus/Maxwells are called Max anyway.

I don't know any small children called Josephine or Hugo if that helps. Or Elizabeth actually, tho I know three Elizas.

CantSupinate · 22/05/2010 13:43

Josephine & Maxim.
What about Joanna? Lovely & rare in current generation!

FrameyMcFrame · 22/05/2010 13:51

Maxim Vengerov

he is probably the best violinist in the world alive today.I love the name Maxim! Very russian sounding.

My name is Josephine, I think it's great that everyone likes it so much! I hated it as a child, much to flowery

ImGonnaCountToThree · 22/05/2010 18:16

Double Maxim! Haha ;-)

Hugo and Juliet are the ones I would pick.

thisisyesterday · 23/05/2010 23:36

i would say Juliet or Josephine

and Maxim (though Max v, popular) or Isaac

SoMuchToBits · 23/05/2010 23:50

For girls Juliet or Josephine (although I love Juliet as a name).

For boys Maxim is not that popluar, but Max (short for Maxwell, Maxim, Maximilian etc) is more common.

Hugo not so popular, but don't like it myself so much.

BafanaBafana · 24/05/2010 09:10

Juliet / Josephine

Maxim - but you'd def get Max, which has been popular for a few years.

evamummy · 25/05/2010 12:41

I think the most timeless names are

Elisabeth
and
Edward

Max and Felix are very 'trendy' at the moment, I think they will date more than the others.
