I can't make up my mind about this one - what do people think?

Yes, sci-fi was my concern. I'd prefer not to nickname if poss so would probably stay away rather than alter.

It's a nickname.

Hullygully · 19/05/2010 14:58

it's simply breathtaking. Sort of wild, windswept beach with an unexpected and strangely attractive piece of driftwood lying mysteriously on the wide stretch of virgin sand.

shufflebum · 19/05/2010 14:59

We have a Xander, love it!
Some people say Zarnder and others say Zanda, we pronounce it the first way. How would you pronounce it with the 'ar' at the end rather than 'er'?

abr1de · 19/05/2010 15:00

I've come across Zander, as a shortened version of ALexander. I like it.

BoldChislersMummy · 19/05/2010 15:01

Oh God that name is quite nauseating, I can imagine the type of mother that would call out zander, zander.

Hullygully · 19/05/2010 15:02

What, rather than "BoldChisler?"

BoldChislersMummy · 19/05/2010 15:02

He would have a brother called Sebastian 'bastian' for short btw.

Zander and Bastian.

EleanorD · 19/05/2010 15:03

I imagine I'd go for the Zarnder pronunciation!

Funnily enough BoldChislers is spot on - Sebastian is also on my list! Something tells me we like slightly different names!! Hey ho, no accounting for taste I guess.

I had a friend at uni calles Xander, short for Alexander.

I always liked the name, but would use the full version on the birth certificate.

CaveMum · 19/05/2010 15:11

Sorry, but the first thing I think of is Buffy the Vampire Slayer - love the tv show, but not keen on the name.

Name the child Alexander and let him chose his own nickname.

babster · 19/05/2010 15:14

Agree with CaveMum. And Zander is worse - it's a fish my grandad used to catch!

AndieWalsh · 19/05/2010 15:19

Not keen. It reminds me of a guy called Christopher who calls himself Topher. Why not Chris? I kind of feel the same way about Zander/Alex.

BoldChislersMummy · 19/05/2010 15:30

Yes EleanorD, I like nice names!

Sebastian and Xander together is very predictable.

shake it up a little. What about Dominic, Marcus or Julian? I like Julius too, but obviously nobody could have a Julius and a Julian! Those are all lovely underused classics without that wannabe predictability factor to them.........

BoldChislersMummy · 19/05/2010 15:30

PS never watched Buffy so I don't know what names it has ruined.

mitfordsisters · 19/05/2010 15:32

You're funny Hully

swanandduck · 19/05/2010 15:40

Fine as a nn but just looks silly as a full name. Why not just call him Alexander and let a nn develop naturally.

EleanorD · 19/05/2010 15:43

Strangely enough I like Sebastian, Xander, Dominic, Marcus AND Julian!
However, husband not keen on Dominic for some reason, I can't quite decide on Marcus and my ex is called Julian...
Good to know people's views on Xander as a full name though - thanks.

I have an Alexander and would love to call him Xander, but he only wants to be called Alex which unsurprisingly is what his name got shortened to as soon as he started school.
You would well find that most boys would much rather have a plain, ordinary name than something that makes them stand out and look different

imahappycamper · 19/05/2010 17:21

Only Xander I know of is Australian so presumably pronounced to rhyme with Panda.
I wondered if it was like Jayden which was really common over there before I heard it here.

GetOrfMoiLand · 19/05/2010 17:25

Sounds like something out of He-Man.

You can just hear that bloke who does the voice over for action movies going 'XANDARRRRRR' as Steven Seagal comes out ponytail aflying.

Hedwig3 · 19/05/2010 17:53

I am with you, can't decide either! No help sorry.
