If you love a name should you use it even if everyone pulls a [hmm] face when you mention it?

We really love Florence, esp. shortened to Floss/Flossie.

But when I have mentioned it to friends and family we have had faces from everyone, even a few deogoratory comments.

So should we use it or find a name that is more acceptable to our friends, family?

Some people have said its posh, which I didn't think it was at all. Is Florence considered so posh that it will really stand out in a state school?

Im with the majority - use it, its a lovely name! We are naming dd3 Florence when she arrives in August and have also had some faces pulled but we dont care! We also had this reaction when we named dd2 Ava (before celeb named her child the same and made it popular!) but we loved it, it really suits her and now everyone loves it too. Do it! Oh and I get the feeling our Florence will also be Floss - dd1 calls my bump Floss already!

Florence is a lovely name- definitely use it!

Ladyoftheflowers- Penelope is beautiful- it's a shame people put you off it but at least you found another name that you love!

dizzydixies · 17/05/2010 19:45

LadyOfTheFlowers - I had no idea you didn't go with Penelope

we used a boy's name for DD3 and everyone is everytime - I don't care, she's fab and she suits it - sod them all, I only get to choose MY kids names once and thats it done

Florence is a wonderful name - DD1 is Florence Amelie and I love her name! She tends to be Florrie most of the time - giggles when I occasionally call her Flossie.

She has never had any negative comments about her name but has had lots of positive comments - and her name is not like any others in our extended families (apart from her little sister.)

Use the name you love - and, FWIW - had she been a boy she may well have been Rafferty (another name I love but may lead to faces.

Not sure why people are pulling faces at Florence. I know quite a lot of them so it is becoming quite popular here.

GladioliBuckets · 18/05/2010 13:35

Yes do it. DS2 is Kurt. People still struggle to think of something nice to say about it when introduced but we honestly don't care. We love it, we love the author he's named after and when he's a teenager he will surely love it too.

plumymummy · 18/05/2010 13:52

Florence is really really popular, so ignore the family faces, your child will probably in a class with another florence at some point so it isn't like they will get teased for it being weird.

birdofthenorth · 18/05/2010 15:18

If you love it, use it (I like it btw).

People will react differently when she's actually arrived!

You cannot please everyone so you should only choose something that pleases you.

I think the best thing is not to mention the name(s) you are considering at all.

Mil didn't seem to like ds's name when we told her what he was called when he was born.

She kept telling everyone that his middle name was his first name because she kept 'forgetting'. It's her passive aggressive way of making a point.

LittleBeth53 · 19/05/2010 05:42

In your heart & your gut, is your baby a Florence? If so then use it no matter what anyone else says.

I'm due in september & when I first found out I was pregnant I instinctively knew it was a little boy & when I had my 20 week scan sure enough - it was a boy. And in my heart, he's a Jacob. Every time he kicks, I think, that's my Jakey!

If the names in your heart & you just know that your baby is a Florence, then definitely use it! When she's born all the friends/relatives will love the name because it's HER name & they'll absolutely love her to pieces. x

Florence is lovely and not a weird name at all. Don't see why anyone thinks it is?! It's not as if you want to call her something like Picklebottommonkeydward! Now that would be weird....!

Hedwig3 · 20/05/2010 12:52

I know somebody whose 'girl name' got the nose-wrinkle effect from family and as it bothered her she thought up a new one. She had a son in end so wasn't a problem any way BUT...

About a year later a close family member of hers had a daughter and used the original name with no problem at all!
