Ok, really need a girl's name now

4 weeks to go and am no closer to picking a name I can stick with for more than a few hours before deciding I actually hate it!

This is baby 3-already have an Eleanor (never shortened) and a William-always called Billy. If baby 3 is a boy thinking of Toby, Michael or oliver. If it's a girl the only names I like are Eliza (too close to Eleanor) and Pheobe (DH hates). Used to like Abigail but now think it is too girly.

Quite like Jemeima but prob too posh. Like all Elizabeth's nn but not the full name itself and not sure could ever go with a nn as a proper name.

Any ideas?!!

Jemima is nice.

what about Eliza then? it's a shortening of Elizabeth but it's a name in its own right.
you can still use all the Elizabeth nns.

or Katherine?
Frances
Heather

okay, i read the whole post except " If it's a girl the only names I like are Eliza (too close to Eleanor)"

Lumpity · 15/05/2010 14:46

I do like Frances-was thinking of using as middle name for Abigail. Just not sure about the nns for Frances and seems such a grown up name for a little girl.

but you've got to remember she's not always going to be a little girl; it's such an elegant name for a growing young lady and a woman.

when she's little she can be Frankie, or Franny, or Cissy (okay, maybe not Cissy!)
even Annie would work...

Lumpity · 15/05/2010 15:02

Do you think Annie would be a possible nn for Frances then? Annie is one of DH's choices but I didn't know what name (that I liked!) it could be short for.

Matilda

My DD is Dora. Youc an have that one for free!

BTW don't think Eliza is too close to Eleanor at all.

Lumpity · 15/05/2010 15:20

The Eliza/Eleanor debate is a big issue! It seems pretty 50/50 as to whether people think it shouldn't be done or isn't a prob. I love it and think we could shortened Eliza to Lizzie/Izzy/Liza and that leaves Ellie for Eleanor should she use it as she gets older. But even I refer to Eleanor as El occasionally and that could be either of them!

Like Matilda but prefer nn Tilly and we have a Billy....

How about Bethany? You could still use a lot of the Elizabeth nicknames without it seeming too strange e.g. Beth, Bessie, Betty or possible even Annie!

Jemima's lovely too and I certainly wouldn't discount it for being 'too posh' as it's the child that will make the name.

mathanxiety · 15/05/2010 19:38

Annabel or Anastasia could be formal versions of Annie.

imahappycamper · 15/05/2010 19:42

Dim for Frances: my mother had a name book which gave the dim. for Frances as Fanny. Perhaps not. Do know an adult Fran.

beccas · 15/05/2010 19:45

I have an Eliza and my girls names for no 2 due soon are
Nancy
Beatrice (bea of course!)
Naomi
Can you return favour, what are your boys names on shortlist? I'm struggling!

jkb1980 · 15/05/2010 20:24

Frances is lovely! My sister is Frances, usually called by her full name but occasional nn Francie as a little girl and Frankie by her uni friends. Will shortly become Auntie Frank!!!

Lumpity · 15/05/2010 20:36

Beccas

My boys names:

Toby
Oliver
Michael
Henry

Personally I like the name Thea, could be Theo for a boy?

pixiestix · 17/05/2010 14:49

Ooh, Phoebe is lovely - is there any way DH could be persuaded?

Runoutofideas · 17/05/2010 15:15

How about Francesca instead of Frances. I knew one who shortened it to Ceci (pron. Checky)which I thought was nice. Or Imogen? Would be my dd3 if I ever have one!

honeydragon · 17/05/2010 15:20

elspeth???? that's not easy to nickname

Hattieboomboom · 17/05/2010 15:26

Have a look at this - hours of fun: www.statistics.gov.uk/statbase/Product.asp?vlnk=15282

Another vote for Frances.

Or you could go Austen-like and have Eleanor and Marianne. It is a lovely combo.

AndieWalsh · 18/05/2010 10:31

Annie short for:

Annabel
Annalise
...or just Anna (lovely, simple, classic name that goes with Eleanor)

Billy and Eleanor are both quite traditional. Arte you thinking of sticking with that sort of name?

Imogen is a lovely suggestion.
Alice
Elizabeth / Elisabeth (Beth, Bess, Betsy etc)
Flora or Florence
Rose names - Rose, Rosanna, Rosamund etc
Harriet
Maria
Marianne
Laura
Sarah (Sally, Sadie)
Lydia
Helena (Nell)
Penelope (Penny, Nell)

Lumpity · 18/05/2010 20:50

Yes think it needs to be a traditional name to go with the other 2.

Imogen is lovely but too similar in sound to our surname for me-no names ending in N really work.

I do like Harriet, Lydia and Penelope but DH not keen. That is the problem -we can't find a name we both "love" and on both other babies we have both agreed completly so the idea of compromise seems a shame at this point. However, once we have been calling it baby for a few weeks we may feel different!!

i think Elizabeth Frances or Elizabeth Rose is looking like the most likely name to try out. If after a few days it really isn't working we will think again.

What about Kate? Or Kate Elizabeth? That wouldn't sound out of place with your other DC's names.
