Is it unusual to not really have any names you like?

I have 2 - one boy (Joseph - too popular?) and one girl (Erin - rejected by DH) name that I think are ok plus one girls name which I really want as a tribute to someone I lost but would be far too chicken to use it as a first name.

Apart from that I just don't have any names I would consider calling my baby. I have 7 months or so to decide so maybe I will get some inspiration.

I know what I really dislike - Poppy, Daisy, Annabel, Alice, Matilda (flowery girlie names), David, John, Richard, Paul, (sensible names) etc.

Can anyone suggest anything along the Joseph/Erin lines that I might like?

I have loads of girls names that I like but really not gone on any single boys name ... of course sod's law have DS aged 3 and expecting DS2 in 10 weeks.
( we have decided Max for him but more DHs preference than mine. I like it but no more than other boys names)

'Course faraway hills are green and if I was expecting a girl would probably be saying the opposite!

Some suggestions

Joshua? Ewan? Lewis? Fraser?

Ailish? Shan? Rachel? Emma? Amy?

Plenty of time to decide

DuelingFanjo · 14/05/2010 08:30

oh dearie. None of those appeal to me, though some are nice.

I like the name Ruth which is the name of one of my best friends but not sure if I could give a child the same name. I have Welsh and Irish connections and an Irish surname and worried about going the whole hog with a completely Irish sounding name so that's why we're not sure about Joseph. I find Welsh names really harsh (Dislike Gareth, Geraint, Iwan, etc).

I do like Iris and Isis and did like Martha, Evie and Edie until they got used by everyone.

I might buy a book and just cross off all the ones I dislike then work from there.

For DS2 we could not find a name we really liked/agreed on - we had all the name books. I really wanted Bruno but DH would not have it - said it was a gay german name (before Sacha Baron Cohen's film, too). In the end we tried out several names on him when he arrived and his birth wasn't registered for five weeks as we were still deciding. Even on the way to the register office I wasn't sure what name he would get. Took months for the name to feel right tho. I had PND and was depressed during the pregnancy so that was probably the real reason I was so undecisive.

Sorry - realise this is not going to help you but let's you know that IMO it's not unusual to be unable to choose a name.

I thought I posted here but maybe not?!!
Jonah?
Eden??

I think this isn't that unusual. I just 'knew' what my dd was going to be called, but for ds it was a "...that'll do. It's okay, isn't it..." type of conversation at 39 weeks pg. A year down the line, I don't dislike his name, think it suits him but it doesn't THRILL me. But I don't wish I'd named him something else either.

DH and I discovered we had BIG differences in names once we started trying to shortlist for DC1.

Couldn't have done it without 2 baby name books that I literally went through line by line marking possibles - anything at all I might ever consider. Then DH took off what he hated (he didn't want to look through the books himself ..... not that interested).

Over time some names fell off the shortlist and others appealed more and more. When DC1 turned out to be DD it took 24 hours in hospital to decide her first name then another 24 to choose a middle name from the list too. Long process in other words and not an immediate 'I love that name' situation at all. Combination of name, meaning, short forms, how it went with surname etc. In the end it was Anna - strong name, great meaning and not flowery.

This time round we have a clear leader for the name so if DC2 is NOT a boy as the scan suggested we are in big trouble.

I think you have to think of the future when naming babies, when the child is older some names are silly. Modern names can seem so dated in a few years and if you think of the child as a grown adult, eventually a granny does the name seem suitable? I think some names can be shortened into something awful. When I was a teacher some children had some modern names and some had foreign words . 1 was called 'rawney' . when i asked what it meant she said it meant a gipsy lady but she was wrong it means a posh non gipsy.

DuelingFanjo · 14/05/2010 21:18

I'm waiting on a list from my DH of names he likes. I have a feeling we're going to be at odds here. He doesn't like any of the short list I have come up with!

I do know what middle names I want but guess what, DH doesn't think that the baby should have a middle name.

Thank goodness we have loads of time!
