DH & I love the name Louisa if our first baby, due in 5 weeks, is a girl. My only concern is that she will be mistakenly called Louise. I am a Joanna and have been called Joanne more times than I can remember. Obviously all the important people (friends & family) know what my name is, but even when I left work yesterday the receptionist cheerfully called out "goodbye Joanne" as I went out the door...

Are there any parents out there with Louisas who have found that this is a problem?

Also, thinking ahead, if we have a second child, does saying Louisa and Kate (for example) make it sound more like Louise?

Am I over-thinking this and should we just be happy that we love the name?!

Louisa is a lovely name

I think it sounds different to Louise (which I also like).

Hassled · 13/05/2010 09:55

You're over-thinking this. Louisa is lovely - go with it if you like it.

dizzydixies · 13/05/2010 10:03

its lovely and easy to correct if there are any mistakes

weblette · 13/05/2010 10:08

Lovely name, stop over-thinking (which is very normal when you get to 35wks!) go with it and ignore silly people

diddl · 13/05/2010 10:57

It´s a lovely name.

Correct & glare at people who are ignorant & drop the "a" off!

BallpointPen · 13/05/2010 10:59

I love Louisa, it's on my list.

Don't worry about mis-pronunciation, it's not a big deal.

LuluF · 13/05/2010 11:52

I'm a Louisa.

People who know me call me Louisa, but at school teachers always called me Louise, and people at work who I didn't see on a daily basis would always get it wrong. Actually at school - if a teacher got it wrong - the rest of my class used to shout 'a' en masse.

They don't mean to et it wrong - it's just that Louise is more usual, and they don't think about it. It used to annoy me - but there are worse things to be called, I suppose.

Thanks everyone, I will relax about it now and just be smugly pleased that we have finally found our girl's name!

I have a Louisa, she never gets Louise! Funnily enough I always loved Louise as a name but it didn't go with our surname so we went with Louisa.

cherrylips · 13/05/2010 18:19

I have a Louisa too! She is called Louisa 99% of the time :-)

Mylittlebubble · 13/05/2010 18:40

I have a Louisa and she is never called anything other than Louisa.

Love it

Mylittlebubble · 13/05/2010 18:41

Wow is Louisa quite popular then? I haven't seen any other little Louisa's, yet

Lonnie · 13/05/2010 21:13

I love Louisa

I have an Eloisa and yes she does get called Eloise but she corrects it (10) and I correct it it dosnt happens a lot.

and I have met 1 Louisa none at the primary school we use

mrsbabookaloo · 13/05/2010 21:16

I have a Louisa, and she is mostly Lulu, but I will say that her key worker at nursery DOES call her Louise. Bit annoying, but not the end of the world. But hard if you've lived with the Joanne/Joanna thing your whole life.

letsblowthistacostand · 13/05/2010 21:26

Lulu is so cute! mylittlebubble I don't think Louisa has been in the top 100 names in the UK at any time in the past 80 years. Certainly not in the past 5! Due for a revival IMO.

HinnyPet · 13/05/2010 21:36

It pisses me right off! Louisa is totally different to Louise.
My name is Louisa too, after years of being wound up, if I get called Louise now I totally ignore the person who is shouting after me!
Probably unreasonable behaviour but my name is NOT LOUISE. it is LOUISA. Your daughter will just get used to it I guess.
(rant over, sorry )

LuluF · 13/05/2010 23:41

HinnyPet Hello - nice to meet another - not too many of us around

HinnyPet · 13/05/2010 23:49

Hi Lulu, it's nice to be a bit different innit?

MrsRhettButler · 14/05/2010 00:02

my friend is called luisa and spells it like that. she says she's never had a problem, maybe down to the spelling? (italian spelling i think as she was born in italy)

MrsRhettButler · 14/05/2010 00:03

btw i forgot to say, i love the name its very pretty

LuluF · 14/05/2010 10:36

Yes, HinnyPet, it is nice to be a bit different, especially as, when I went to school there were five or so Sarahs, Emmas and Lisas who all had to be distinguished by the initial of their last name.

And, actually going back to what you said, about ignoring people if they call you Louise - I guess I do that, too. I just assume they must be talking to someone else.

When picking names for your kids, do you think having a less popular name influenced your choices?

HinnyPet · 14/05/2010 16:25

Totally!
Mine have popular names as when I was at school I didn't like to be different eyes
