thisisyesterday · 12/05/2010 10:44

i love it, but i think it depends how you pronounce it
i would pronounce it lev-ee
rather than lee-vye (as in the jeans)

paulaplumpbottom · 12/05/2010 10:45

I like it alot and don't think its at all "chav"

chimchar · 12/05/2010 10:45

i know a teenage boy levi...it suits him, and i like it, but i think i does sound a little bit "chav" sorry....

loads of other great biblical more unusual names to choose from!

notso · 12/05/2010 10:55

When I was a chain smoking tracksuit loving sovereign wearing teen I wanted a boy named Levi Harley sorry.

PestoEatsBallotPapers · 12/05/2010 11:02

For a sibling you could have Pepe - equally cute

Hedwig3 · 12/05/2010 11:02

I saw Levi on a WW1 memorial stone recently and that really made me think differently about it... along with the name Jesse that was there too.

Not my cup of tea though.

thisisyesterday · 12/05/2010 11:20

see i like it because of Primo Levi, which is totally not chav, i think you'll agree

it does have chav connotations though sadly,

I know a very 'respectable' Levi (Lee-vei)- the only one I know. He is 3 or 4. It's a strong name with good Old Testament history.

KRH · 12/05/2010 13:02

I have always loved the name and it's Old Testament connotations (one who is devoted to the work of the Church), but 2 reasons why we've never used it...

  1. My hubby can't get away from the fact that it's an anagram of "evil"!
  2. I have heard of it becoming pretty popular in very "chavvy" areas and schools in our city.

Yes - I HATE the word "chavvy" too - but it would still put me off the name because it's thought of in that way by other people. Having said that - I guess it depends on what circles you move in. We chose our kids' names because of the meaning/Biblical connotations and certainly with our son's name it was pretty uncommon when he was born. It is now becoming a lot more common and from what I can gather both names are now seen as very middle-class yummy-mummy names (according to MN anyway!). I'm confident in our decisions however and the people who really know us know why we chose them. The kdis themselves also know why and so if other people think differently I'm not sure I really care!

clpsmum · 12/05/2010 13:11

KRH - Thanks but am dying to know your kids names now!

Think i have changed my mind about Levi and deep down knew that it is a bit 'chavvy' just sad coz i love the name but am put off by people judging any child before they meet them/having preconceived ideas etc.

Thanks everyone for your opinions much appreciated xxx

I like a lot of OT names but as a christian I wouldn't use Levi. As it was the tribe of temple priests with strict specific laws to remain separate I would feel strange using it.

Same way I'd think it a little strange for someone to use 'Christian' as a name if they weren't.

KRH · 12/05/2010 13:28

Lovethesea - Really interesting point about Levi! I agree on the use of the name "Christian" too!

clpsmum - Noah (which apparently is either really ugly or totally yummy-mummy depending on who you speak to/which threads you read!) and Isabella (which is apparently a totally safe yummy-mummy name!)

We're expecting twins now and I know some people will HATE the names we've chosen, but I don't care - we love them and they're certainly unusual! (well - 3 of them are anyway - 1 of our girl's names is probably a safe yummy mummy name too, but who cares!)

mumofeightplusfour · 12/05/2010 15:00

again the fact it is an anagram of evil would make me think twice

Acanthus · 12/05/2010 15:15

Like vomit always puts me off vimto.

Sorry, tangent

LetThereBeRock · 12/05/2010 16:06

I love it. I don't think of it as 'chavvy'. I just think of it as a Hebrew name.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 14/05/2010 08:53

my friend's OH is hungarian, their son is Levente shortened to levi, pronounced lev-ee

cute

TiggyR · 15/05/2010 08:03

It's big in gypsy/traveller circles. And it's a boy's name. For a girl it's beyond yuk.

My nephew is called Levi but only as his middle name, so it doesn't get used much. Anyway it doesn't strike me as chavvy so much as having jewish links (my BIL's mum is jewish though he is not religious). Nice name, I think!

thirtysomething · 15/05/2010 08:53

I love it for a boy - doesn't seem a "chav" name to me bu would be unusual in the Midlands. For me it has strong Hebrew connotations.

Also love Eli for a boy (pronounced eee-lie)

GhostInTheBackOfYourHead · 15/05/2010 08:58

I like it, but then my DD has an Old Testament name beginning with L!

To me it reminds me of Levi Primo and Levi Srauss- there is a wonderful if depressing Billy Bragg song called Levi Stubbs' Tears
here

casino81 · 16/05/2010 16:40

hello

LuluF · 16/05/2010 16:50

Yes - reminds me of the beautiful Billy Bragg song, too.
