Petroc

Petroc if DC2 is a boy? Too bonkers? Too Cornish (we're not)?

DC1 is Felix.

Foreign 2 syllable surname.

Have you read Notes From an Exhibition? (Or something like that...) He's a character in that book. Not a particularly good book but lovely name. What nn would you have?

umf · 10/05/2010 10:15

No, hadn't heard of the book! NN I'm not sure - Rocky would be obvious one, but perhaps not ideal if he turns out to be very small/camp/bookish. Roo?

DH wants Petroc August, with August pronounced the Scandinavian way with an Ow sound at the beginning.

Petroc is lovely, but I automatically think of Cornwall, and would assume some Cornish connection. Rocky, I think is awful.

CakeandRoses · 10/05/2010 10:25

I love unusual names (and we share the same taste in names for DS1s!) but I'm afraid I saw the subject and thought 'Pet Rock' (as in silly 80s fad). That might be just me so if the majority like it then feel free to dismiss my inane thought!

seeker · 10/05/2010 10:27

Oh don't be silly. Get him to change his own name to Petroc August if he likes it so much and call you child something sensible.

minipie · 10/05/2010 10:28

I thought Pet Rock too.

As in, lump of rock with hair and eyes. Not really all that flattering a name for your child

MmeLindt · 10/05/2010 10:30

I thought Pet Rock, I am afraid.

Is it pronounced like that or more Pet-ro?

umf · 10/05/2010 10:30

August IS a sensible name if you're Scandinavian! Though they're all busy calling theirs Kevin at the moment in wrong-headed Anglo chic. Or worse Kewin, thinking the w is pronounced v.

umf · 10/05/2010 10:32

Hah! Alright, pet rock not a good image. I can see a DS1 drawing of one.

Pronounced more Pe-troc than Pet-roc, but problem evidently there.

NoahAndTheWhale · 10/05/2010 10:34

Makes me think of the presenter on Radio 3, Petroc Trelawney. Would make me presume there is some Cornish connection.

The one on Radio 3 pronounces it Pe-trock btw.

DecorHate · 10/05/2010 10:35

Ds2 knows a Petroc. he initially thought the child's name was Petrol!

CakeandRoses · 10/05/2010 10:38

umf - LOL, is that really true re Kevin/Kewin?! Loving that thought!

SirBoobAlot · 10/05/2010 10:42

Also thought Pet Rock, I'm afraid.

umf · 10/05/2010 10:49

cakeandroses I'm afraid so. Likewise Thim for Tim. You get to see the names because there's a fashion for "registration plates" for buggies with the child's name.

Alternatives to Petroc? (Tho I still quite like it.)

DH likes Bertie, but Bertram too posh and I can't manage to like Albert.

I like Idris, but doesn't work with surname.
Also Ivo, but again too posh?

(Cousins are already called Oscar and Hugo!)

CakeandRoses · 10/05/2010 11:00

at buggy registration plates!

We met a lovely Bertie recently, he was in his 20s so it stood out as being quite unusual (being pg and name-obsessed, I questioned him on his full name, whether he liked it etc!), turns out that the name on his birth cert was just 'Bertie' and he really liked it.

Albert was my DH's fave name but it's not for me. I guess Robert for nn Bertie at a pinch but I'm guessing that will be way too normal for you

I really like Ivo. Have a friend named Ivan who we sometimes call Ivo.

We've picked Caspar for DC2 if he's a boy.

CakeandRoses · 10/05/2010 11:03

More Bertie long names: Gilbert (loving this!), Lambert, Hubert, Herbert and Wilbert

umf · 10/05/2010 11:10

Robert? How mainstream is that??

Hmm, I'm struggling with those -berts. Perhaps will keep working on DH for Ivo. Tho not dismissing Petroc yet!

(Yes, buggy reg plates [shudder]. Still, if anyone owns a baby shop, might be a money-spinner to introduce them here - they're inexplicably popular over the north sea.)

I like Petroc. My first thought was the radio presenter (don't think I've heard of others).

meltedmarsbars · 10/05/2010 11:51

Yes, the radio presenter -does the teatime bit on r3?

Nice name imho!

Jamieandhismagictorch · 10/05/2010 12:29

What about Patrick. Much better, imo?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 10/05/2010 12:33

Rufus
Linus
Cyrus
Saul
Matthew
Evan
Marcus
Christian

DumpyOldWoman · 10/05/2010 12:41

Notes From an Exhibition is an EXCELLENT book!

Petroc is a nice name, too - not well known, but none the worse for that.

umf · 10/05/2010 21:09

Thank you everyone! Glad some of you like it, anyway. Reckon it's still on the shortlist atm.

OP posts:
serin · 10/05/2010 21:51

I like it, but then I have a Patrick and that sounds quite similair.

have a look here

SqueezyB · 11/05/2010 14:54

DH is Cornish and we considered it, but again it just makes me think Pet Rock, sorry!

How about Pasco or Pirran? Both Cornish names.
