Right, where to start? I'm only 15 weeks at the moment. I want to find out the sex but DP doesn't, so we need to decide on a name in the next 5 weeks, otherwise I know I'll keep suggesting names for the right sex and will ruin it for him.

To make matters much more difficult this is out first together. We have two DC each with completely different names. I'd like a name that wouldn't look/sound completely out of place with either set of siblings.

Mine, as you may have guessed, are Xavier and Eliana. His both have celtic/gaelic girls names which are quite popular at the moment.

We have such different tastes it is difficult, somehow we managed to agree on a Girls name. The surname begins with a D and has a hard C sound in the middle, if that helps.

Probably a little more explanation than you wanted but hey-ho! HELP!!

hmm.. You all seem to be leaning towards my way of thinking, which he hate.

His ideas are Conor, Blaine and Finn.

I don't mind Finn but would rather it was short for something and there seems to be rather a log of them about

What we did was to go through the last few years Top 100 and wrote down 20 names we both liked. We then compared. We did this as a whole family so whilst my DS's name is not my first choice it is one I liked and so did everyone else.
Obviously you're not restricted to just the Top 100, you can put whatever you want on the list, but make sure everyone has it on their print-out or whatever.

Hope that makes sense.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 08/05/2010 15:32

Do you think he'll like any of mine? They aren't too weird.

Finn is lovely, but pretty popular, Conor is OK.

tough brief!

I think Clodagh would tie in with his daughters' celtic names for a girl, and maybe something either a bit ecclesiastical/Saintsy like Dominic, Brendan or Leo for a boy. Or a celtic name like Fergus with Gus for short. Gus and Xavier go well, and Fergus in full ties it in with gaelic names.

I really like Marcus as suggest by a pp. Good one.

At the moment my favourite Irish boys name is Diarmuid. That might be too Irish? but it has a lot of history and background like Xavier.

Patrick is also a classic name which would 'go' with Irish names or English names.

Magaly · 08/05/2010 16:45

Orla would go with Eliana

Roisin ties in with your dh's girls names but could be Rosie for short. Eliana and Rosie works well.

Xavielli · 08/05/2010 16:53

Fionn is the tradition spelling of Finn is it not?

DP is Scottish so Scottish names are fine.

I love Fergus, and Douglas. DP wasn't keen.

Brendan is too close to my surname, which is Irish. William and Rosie are already taken by my siblings children.

Another question; I don't mind Conor as a name. The thing that bothers me is that I know if either of his children from his previous marriage had been boys they would have been called this. Am I being totally stupid?

You are all great by the way! Sorry for being so difficult!

Jamieandhismagictorch · 08/05/2010 17:15

No - we love it!. Don't know if it's stupid or not, but the Conor thing would bother me, too. Hold out for something you both love

The conor thing is a little odd. What about Cormac? I prefer that. Also, Cormac is Scottish and Irish which is better for you I think?

I only recently discovered that Conor is pronounced the same as connard which is the French for bastard and that is not great. Not terrible I know as the streets aren't full of fluent french speakers,,,, but still...... Now perhaps that is silly.
