Depends where you live.
Personally I think it is a nice name, but round these here parts would be unusual. Not off the wall though.

Irons · 07/05/2010 20:10

I've not heard an Edwin since my Uncle and he is 55. Oh, and there was the 80something year old man who lived a few doors on.

That should answer your question

alfiemama · 07/05/2010 20:12

Now I quite like this, quite cute

seeker · 07/05/2010 20:12

If you have doubts, don't do it.

SherbetDibDab · 07/05/2010 20:13

I don't see why he would be bullied. Kids have no cultural reference for an Edwin.

oceryo · 07/05/2010 20:23

I quite like it, but prefer Edward.

MamaMtundu · 07/05/2010 20:25

I know of an Edwin in his twenties, lovely lad. (I have to say lad because I'm so old) He's a bit of a cheeky chappy by all accounts; lots of mates and a bit of a charmer with the ladies I hear. I guess Edwin could be shortened to 'Ed' as well, so is flexible that way if your boy decides to shorten it later in life.

If people haven't generally heard the name for a few years then it's prob due for a revival?!!! How many of us named our kids something we thought was quite unusual to then discover we'd tapped into the zeitgeist and now there are dozens of them ...everywhere!!!

imahappycamper · 07/05/2010 20:25

Bad experience of an Edwin at school. Much prefer Edward.

Tanga · 07/05/2010 20:44

Of course he'll be bullied woman, are you mad?

No - it's lovely, I had a bit of a crush on an Edwin in school.

Magaly · 07/05/2010 20:45

In theory it's quite like Edward and in fact a bit easier to say. I think it could be due a revival.

If you go ahead with it now, I think you could expect everybody to make, oooooh bit pompous/effeminate faces at the name, but then in about 5 years the 'ear' will have adjusted and it'll sound a bit more mainstream.

vintage · 07/05/2010 20:52

i really like it

MrsMotMot · 07/05/2010 20:57

I prefer Edmund but Edwin is nice, go for it

Irons · 07/05/2010 21:02

Will be shortened to Eddie.

ravenAK · 07/05/2010 21:05

I like it (I have an Edmund).

Very cool & Dickensian, actually. & whilst Edward is nice, there's absolutely loads of them, whereas he'd probably be the only Edwin in his class!

OliviaMumsnet · 07/05/2010 21:54

what Imahappycamper said

Clary · 07/05/2010 21:56

Lots of Eds round here.

I know 3 Edwards and an Edgar. Edwin I like because it was my dad's name. It's fine.

Most of them are known as Ed or Eddie btw.

KaraThrace · 07/05/2010 21:57

It is a lovely name, and I have a dear friend called Edwin

NorbertDentressangle · 07/05/2010 21:58

The only Edwin I've known was very good looking and a bit of a ladies man. I may even have fallen for his charms for a while .

Its a strange name in that its not unusual IMO yet I've only ever known one.

I don't see it as old-fashioned though.

Tortington · 07/05/2010 22:02

depends where you live as has been said before. my gues is as you are worried aabout it you live somewhere in roughsville

usualsuspect · 07/05/2010 22:03

Its too old fashioned

nooka · 07/05/2010 23:39

My cousin in an Edwin (also a fairly cheeky chappy) he's in his thirties. I don't see why it should be a particular bullying target, and there is always Ed if he chooses to be more "ordinary". I can't see it as being more old fashioned than Archie or Stanley or a while variety of other old man names in vogue.

TheArsenicCupCake · 07/05/2010 23:51

Oh I like edwin.. Reminds me of someone from mypast who was just the bees knees... He did however shorten it to ed.. But I like edwin

CakeandRoses · 08/05/2010 10:51

I like it and I can't see any problems with it at all. Miles more unusual than Edward and Ed/Eddie are great NNs.
