Did you compromise on your baby's name?

Hi all, just wondering if anyone ended up compromising on the name of their precious little one for whatever reason and now wish they had been braver and gone for their ideal name?

We're dithering at the moment but are rapidly running out of time to register the birth. We need to decide - be brave or compromise - what did you do?

Do you mean compromising with each other ? - then yes, but, no we didn't compromise with "the world"

I wanted Gabriel for both DSs, but DS persuaded me it wouldn't be a good idea. I still love it, but it is a bit risky, given that (unfortunately) "gay" seems to be a term of abuse amongst teens and pre-teens

Please tell us the name you fancy ........

portabello · 03/05/2010 19:00

Hi Pixie, our list is Seamus, Jasper, Fred(erick) and Ben(jamin). We love all of them but Seamus and Jasper are our favs except nobody else seems to like them!

We do like Fred and Ben too but are not exactly sure of how popular they are. We don't want something that's super popular alhtough we're not necessarily looking for anything to 'way out' either. He does seem to suit Fred.

We're just all a-dither basically! Any suggestions very welcome!

I compromised and tbh I'm really glad I did. I now adore my sons' names far more than all the names I'd shortlisted. In retrospect "my" names were all a bit try-hard and "different" and subsequently we know lots of them. In going for ultra trad names, we've inadvertently chosen quite unusual names which are truly timeless.

I LOVE Jasper too! Do it!

Jamieandhismagictorch · 03/05/2010 19:23

Oh dear. I'm very sorry, but I hate Jasper... It jsut seems very posh too me, (which is fine if you are posh)

Frederick is great

piscesmoon · 03/05/2010 19:24

All our names were a compromise because we couldn't agree with each other's choice. I wouldn't make any other compromise-go for what you like. I think that if you are not sure then it is good to have a 'safe' name as a second name, in case the DC can't cope with an unusual name.

SparklyJules · 03/05/2010 19:27

I know a little Fred and have always loved his name, and his parents for naming him that! It's a great name.

loobylu3 · 03/05/2010 19:41

I had to compromise a lot on our children's names but only with DH
You should definitely go with the name that you and your partner love or you will only regret!
I love all your name choices!
My favourites as fn are probably Seamus and Jasper.
How about: Jasper Frederick or Seamus Benjamin?

sunshiney · 03/05/2010 19:53

i don't know what you're worrying about honestly! i think all your names are great, any of them would be a good choice.

screw anyone who tells you they don't like your dc's prospective name. better yet, don't tell them your choice.

BakewellTarts · 03/05/2010 19:58

DD1 tells me that she is going to marry a little friend called Jasper...I think its a really cool name. They are only 4 and a bit so young to be making such decisions!

tillywee · 03/05/2010 20:07

A bit...just changed his name a little bit.
Kicking myself ever since.....monster in laws- what can you do?

missjackson · 03/05/2010 20:14

Yes, yes, yes, I compromised
Don't do it!

We couldn't quite decide, and let slip to the ILs that our number one name happened to be that of a certain Welsh socialist... let's just say they are not of that persuasion... well, that sealed it for me, but I compromised on middle names and spent the next year dithering about whether to change them. Even got the form. But never quite had the bottle. (Had also done one of those damn plate things with LO's sweet little feet prints on it and his full name, for his grandma, so that buggered it up too). After a year, you have to do it by deed poll so a major hassle.

Hold firm to what you like. Everyone will have their little eye-roll or nod of approval, but it only lasts a moment, and they will soon see your DS for who he is and his name will seem completely natural.

There's one name that I didn't push for and I now regret that -- I was worried about it because I knew my mum would hate it. I told the DD who would have had The Name (if I hadn't been such a wuss) about the names I had had in mind for her, and she absolutely loved it .

Prinpo · 04/05/2010 18:27

Seamus is fabulous and very rarely used round these 'ere parts. Jasper very good too, although a bit of the moment. Frederick I love, Ben is nice but he'll be one of 2 or 3 in his class. Personally, I'd go with Seamus or Frederick.

Anyway, that's not really what you were asking . I say go for it and don't compromise. Your choices are all good, sound names that will see a boy through to adulthood and beyond. If you know what you like then don't let other people's opinions put you off. He'll become his name very quickly and people will just accept it.

It's your child so it's one of those times when going with your heart is absolutely the right thing to do.

annasophia · 04/05/2010 18:52

Go with the name you and dh LOVE!

Personally I love Jasper - a classic, elegant and masculine name imo.

Seamus is nice too, although I'm never quite sure how to pronounce it.

Fred and Ben are fine but a little non descript and boring to my ears, probably because I know so many... and he will likely be one of several in his class.

How about Jasper Frederick - that sounds cool!!

Magaly · 04/05/2010 18:59

What's the name Mathanxiety? It won't out you!

I wanted to call my dd Phoebe and my mum hated it. SHe hated a lot of names I ran past her. Greta was another one. She said 'are you trying to make me vomit?'. (she's quite classy, honestly! lol).

I should have just said 'sorry'. no in fact I should have just said 'here's Phoebe'.

mathanxiety · 04/05/2010 19:15

It was Brigid -- I was going to use the nn Biddy, and I know that's very old fashioned and Irishy, but I think it could have had a certain cuteness to it. DD absolutely loves it and also loves the nn. It would have suited her as she's really petite and looks like a poster 'Irish child'.

oh! A friend of a friend was going to use that recently (also Irish and living abroad), and then chose Julia instead. Maybe it's about to have a mini revival. I can picture that being very cute in a (strong kooky way, not a girly cute way) on an Irish American girl alright.

mathanxiety · 04/05/2010 19:43

Thank you, Pixie. I think she wants to change it herself some time -- I sometimes call her Biddy anyhow...

Magaly -- I love Phoebe and Greta too.

Magaly · 04/05/2010 19:46

Thanks! my mum who grew up on a farm said to me 'greta was the name of the woman who used to milk the cows' and that was a bad thing.... Milking cows sounds so cool to me. All Very hugh Fearnley whittingstall to me.

mintyfresh · 04/05/2010 21:06

We compromised - DH wanted Archie, I wanted Theo and we just couldn't agree! DS is now Laurie which he seems to suit.

I love Jasper too btw

Good luck - I remember getting so with DH that he wouldn't go with my choices!!
