Isaac - too biblical?

It's a lovely name, but does anyone associate it with fire & brimstone, killing a son, blinding etc ... or am I just overthinking things???! In other words, is it a silly name for an atheist (i.e. me!) to use for their child??

Thanks for your thoughts!!

these days I would be surprised if most people know its origins. We have an Isaac at school. I like it

arabellaandbaby · 03/05/2010 11:15

Isaac is a nice name. I would have used this if my PFB turned out to be a boy and I'm not particularly religious. I think you should go for it.

Pretty mainstream these days. Like it.

bronze · 03/05/2010 11:17

I have one and have since found out its pretty popular

screamingskull · 03/05/2010 11:22

love this name.

it is quite/getting poular.

Think you may be overthinking it. some people probabaly dont even realise its from the bible

shockers · 03/05/2010 11:23

He didn't actually kill him .

I love it. It's DS2's middle name.

OrangeSpacedust · 03/05/2010 12:07

Thanks all ... think I'm going to go for it if noone will think we're bible-bashers then ...!

I love it- it is the only name dh and I have for boy for dc3. We want to use Ike as nn. Now, if only we could find a girls name we love as much...

ZZZenAgain · 03/05/2010 14:01

tbh I would assume you are a gung-ho religious family but I don't think it is an eccentric name choice at all. I have come across a couple but come to think of it, they were all American missionary families!

telsa · 03/05/2010 14:16

I always think of Newton not the Bible and Newton signals the age of enlightenment and rationalism!

imahappycamper · 03/05/2010 19:04

I know a family with Jacob, Samuel and Isaac who are not in the least religious. The names just refelct name fashions at the time.

nagoo · 03/05/2010 19:52

Agree that now quite mainstream. As atheist you shouldn't bother about the bible story.

tassisssss · 03/05/2010 19:55

I still think of it as quite full-on-Christian (and I speak as one of those!) along the lines of Noah, but realise it's way more mainstream in some areas. Love it! Know one wee Isaac who gets it shortened to Zac which I like too!

Salbysea · 03/05/2010 19:56

lovely name, It not that rare these days so I associate it with lovely little people I know not bible stories

Tyson86 · 03/05/2010 19:56

It is a lovely name and was on our list along with Noah, we have chosen Oscar if its a boy now, dont care about popularity, i dont know any Isaac's or Oscars.
