Sandy (for a boy)

What do people think ... would you automatically assume it's short for Alexander, and "only" a nickname? Too cute? Too Scottish? (Not nec. a bad thing!!) Or actually quite cool and classy?
We're considering it for next DC if a boy (not a girl though - feel it's old-fashioned for a girl! )

Opinions welcome - thank you!

I would assume it's short for Alexander/Alistair.

recireci · 30/04/2010 19:26

I think of it as mainly a girls' name, but if I heard of a boy called Sandy I would assume it was short for Alexander.

dizzydixies · 30/04/2010 19:31

another one thinking short for Alexander but then again I AM scottish!!

CurlyCasper · 30/04/2010 19:34

I always think of it as a boy's name, having grown up among several Sandys (in Scotland). When prompted to think about it, I know it's short for Alexander. But I generally just accept is as it is.

I knew Sandys of all types - from school hunk to grungy/geek, so don't associate it with any stereotype.

I have never met a girl called Sandy (and I am not in Scotland any more).

Go for it!

LetThereBeRock · 30/04/2010 19:39

I'd assume it's short for Alexander.

LetThereBeRock · 30/04/2010 19:40

I wouldn't use it as a first name, as a nickname for Alexander, yes,but not alone.

OrangeSpacedust · 30/04/2010 20:01

Okaaaay, many of you would seem to assume it's short for Alexander. Hm. How about the sound though ? nice or not? (I like the school hunk ?> grungy geek spectrum, Curly!)

It sounds like . . . a nickname for Alexander.

recireci · 30/04/2010 20:07

How about Xander or Zander?

pitterpatterfeet · 30/04/2010 20:32

I think it's lovely but would but Alexander on birth certificate.

Lovethesea · 30/04/2010 20:42

My aunt is Sandy so I think of her, but otherwise I would presume Alexander ...

theroseofwait · 30/04/2010 21:07

My BIL is called Sandy, (not short for Alexander though, just Sandy) and he loathes it - he did however say that he wouldn't have minded being called Alexander with the NN Sandy as then at least he could have 'opted out' in his teens and early twenties when he did have the Mickey taken a bit.

I think it's a fab NN for Alexander and would gladly have used it for one of my DSs had BIL not forbidden it upon pain of death!

GibberingGinger · 30/04/2010 23:15

I love Sandy for a man/boy. But would probably use Alexander as a full name and pray that it wasn't shortened to Alex, or even worse Alec which I don't like. Unfortunately DH completely refuses to consider it saying its a girl's name.

Paulinespens · 30/04/2010 23:52

Am sadly old enough to remember Sandy from Crossroads. A rather gingery, weasel-like young man in a wheelchair.
Don't like it.

PiratePrincess · 30/04/2010 23:52

PIL is Sandy (yep, short for Alexander).

DH's brother is Sandy Junior (yep, again short for Alexander ).

I also have a female friend called Sandie.

All of them are Scottish (we're all in southern England btw).

Are you from Scotland?!

Granny23 · 01/05/2010 00:01

My DGC1 is Sandy but Alexander on birth certificate so that he can use that if he wants when he is older. ATM Sandy suits him very well as he is an adorable blue eyed, blonde, 3yr old. Sanders is another variant.

nooka · 01/05/2010 03:57

I would assume (and very much hope) that Sandy was short for Alexander. One of my parents very good friends is called Sandy and very lovely he is too.

twosofar · 01/05/2010 07:09

I would assume it was short for Alexander and he was Scottish.

It sounds terribly old fashioned to me - reminds me of names like Malcolm and Geoffrey.

I much prefer Alex or Xander as diminutives of Alexander but IMHO I don't think Sandy is great as a proper name - it's a bit too flimsy.
