Alfie.... really that popular?!

I'm having a boy in a couple of months and was absolutely intent on the name Alfie (either Alfie Gene or Alfie Peter... grandparent middle names) since the very beginning of my pregnancy. I had absolutley no idea, being a first timer, that I was about to saddle my son with the same name as every other child in the country.... is it really that popular? I had no idea until I started reading this thread!

And if so, any ideas for something similar-ish that won't leave me with 10 children running every time I call?

Alfred/Alfie along with Archibald/Archie is indeed very popular and feels very 'trendy' and may for that reason date much more than other more timeless names.

I don't like it personally, but that shouldn't matter to you.

Names I love include
Tobias
Quentin
Sebastian
Oscar

Well I don't know any, whereas I have come across several Archies.

There are 17 Alfies in my ds' class

It's ok but seems abit 'babyish' for a man. Yes it is very very popular and there will probably be lots in the same class, but if you like it go for it, it's not that bad.

Don't know a single one. A batty woman peered at my ds today and exclaimed 'O he must be called Alfie, he looks just like an Alfie don't you think?'
Err, no
But I can see where she's coming from. He does look an awful lot like the Shirley Hughes drawings (and by that I mostly mean a bit grubby )

Hmmm, you're right about it dating if it's that common at the moment. Thanks!

It is a nice name, but I've met a lot of them DD's age (2) and I have to admit I'm not a big fan of nicknames as full names, especially on boys.

You could have a look at the top 100 names list to get some more inspiration www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2009/sep/08/baby-names-children-jack-olivia-mohammed

But if it's the one you love then just use it - if DC2 is a boy he'll be Dylan, even though it's breaking all my own rules about using popular names, me and DH both love it!
