I've found more to say it ends like Caroline than Josephine... do you think it just comes down to personal preference?

I'd like it to be the traditional pronunciation (i.e. the same as Emmeline Pankhurst) - I just keep finding contrasting answers as to which one that is(!)

I'd pronounce Emme-leen. Lovely name.

WickedWitchSouthWest · 30/04/2010 11:11

Emma-leen. Pretty name, I really like it

nikkisbump · 30/04/2010 11:12

Emma - Leen and I LOVE the name!

mrsfred · 30/04/2010 11:13

DD has an Emmeline in her class (she's lovely), pronounced Emma-line, Emmy (Emmie) for short.

ellasmum1 · 30/04/2010 11:25

my friend has a daughter called emmeline and they pronounce it emma-leen. Lovely name!

ellasmum1 · 30/04/2010 11:27

prefer emma-leen to emma-line myself. Think Josephine and Emmaline lovely idea.

Merrylegs · 30/04/2010 11:39

It rhymes with Queen. Here:

Before Tea
by A.A. Milne (from When We Were Very Young)

Emmeline
Has not been seen
For more than week. She slipped between
The two tall treees at the end of the green...
We all went after her. "Emmeline!"

"Emmeline,
I didn't mean --
I only said that your hands weren't clean."
We went to the trees at the end of the green...
But Emmeline
Was not to be seen.

Emmeline
Came slipping between
The two tall trees at the end of the green.
We all ran up to her. "Emmeline!
Where have you been?
Where have you been?
Why, it's not more than week!" And Emmeline
Said, "Sillies, I went and saw the Queen.
She says my hands are purfickly clean!"

Josephine and Emmeline would be fine, very nice

MamaLazarou · 01/05/2010 13:00

Emmeline (Emma-Leen) is a wonderful name. the only problem with it is that it only sounds very subtly different from Emily, which is very popular right now, so a young Emmeline would spend a lot of time correcting people who thought she said Emily.

APassionateWoman · 01/05/2010 16:52

Emma-Leen. Gorgeous name. If I ever have another daughter she may well be called this.

applesnpears · 02/05/2010 00:53

We almost called our daughter this and I still think its beautiful, but we dropped the idea when we were suggesting it to family/friends and most of them said: "Emily? thats nice" We felt she would constantly be correcting others

confusedfirsttimemum · 02/05/2010 07:22

Emma, Emma, Emma-leen (by Hot Chocolate!). Definitely rhymes with Queen.

I wanted this name on our list for DD, but DH exercised his veto (I had a veto too, for those who may have feminist concerns about that)

littledawley · 02/05/2010 07:27

Another vote for Emma-leen here. Lovely name.

JosephineClaire · 04/05/2010 08:37

Merrylegs, that poem is lovely, thanks! According to the MN vote, we have 'Emmaleen' - but I hadn't considered the potential mix-up with Emily, which is now really bothering me...

Back to the drawing board..

I believe Emmeline Pankhurst pronounced hers Emma-line. Great role model.

JosephineClaire · 05/05/2010 12:08

I've also just thought that the four generations of women, from my grandmother to my daughter, would be:

Kathleen
Pauline
Josephine
Emmeline (if we go for the '-een' ending)

And I think this is a really lovely link between the generations of mothers/daughters in the family

Any middle name suggestions?

I like:

Kate
Claire/Clara
Sofie
Augusta
Lucy
