but what think ye of Prairie as a girl's name? I quite like the sound of it, as well as the landscape it evokes (which has family significance for me)...

(And it's not as hippy dippy as Meadow, surely?)

It's simply beautiful. For me it says gently blowing grasses under a wide pale blue sky, freedom, fresh air, and (if they hadn't all been killed off)a lone, doe eyed bison wandering at will across the vasty plain.

scurryfunge · 29/04/2010 15:07

Sounds ok...I think of meercats though and a little house

thumbwitch · 29/04/2010 15:09

prairie dog would kill it for me...

Shaz10 · 29/04/2010 15:09

We love it!!

ActuallyMyNamesMarina · 29/04/2010 15:09

Terrible. It is every bit as hippy dippy as Meadow

It's up there with Savannah (yuk -sorry to anyone who as a Savannah)- why do you want to call your child after a huge area of grassland - you wouldn't pick Tundra, would you?

Shaz10 · 29/04/2010 15:10

I think Tundra might have resonance with Mighty Boosh fans.

scurryfunge · 29/04/2010 15:11

It's a very plain name

Kwini · 29/04/2010 15:11

Ah, see I used to love Savannah - but it's rather too trendy now, methinks...

Ho ho, scurryfunge

This is a pretty academic discussion as I doubt DH will go for it...but still, fun to dream!

Prairie is nicer than Meadow, but please avoid Dawn as a middle name. Or Mary.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/04/2010 15:12

A tiny bit of wee crept out at Hully's comments

wilkos · 29/04/2010 15:15

I like Copse very much

Also suggest Undertow

WombFrootShoot · 29/04/2010 15:42

Copse is lovely because it's pretty much:

a) Nickname proof
b) Unusual but not, y'know, stupid

I have a nephew called Barricade. He loves his name and it goes so well with his sister's name. Which is Balustrade.

scurryfunge · 29/04/2010 15:44

I know an Architrave and Antimacassar aswell....Archie and Cassie for short...very pretty

Hullygully · 29/04/2010 15:48

I think you are all being a bit silly now, aren't you?

scurryfunge · 29/04/2010 15:49

Sorry miss.....got carried away...won't do it again....not for a while anyway

WombFrootShoot · 29/04/2010 15:50

I hope that remark wasn't directed at me Hully

Hullygully · 29/04/2010 15:50

Babynames is not the place for tomfoolery and tittering.

ShowOfHands · 29/04/2010 15:55

Show Of Hands sing about an Undertow you know.

Prairie puts me in mind of The Lion King which is a bit, you know, dead dads and evil uncles but quite evocative of modern dysfunctional families.

Oh yes. Prairie works on many levels.

WombFrootShoot · 29/04/2010 15:59

Tomfoolery and Tittering are my 2nd cousins on my mothers' side
