Thoughts please! And how would you spell it; Colette or Collette?

Probably double l because its pronounced col-lette something I thought about when choosing names was my chidren learning to write and 2 lls won't make a difference to 1 l!!!!

dizzydixies · 27/04/2010 16:44

I'm not overly keen - it always makes me think of the trousers sorry

jumpingjackhash · 27/04/2010 16:48

My ex cheated on me with a Colette, so I can't stand it personally. Also, isn't it a brand of contraception pill?

Sorry.

recireci · 27/04/2010 16:49

I think it's a lovely name I would spell it Colette as it is derived from Nicole.

serenity · 27/04/2010 16:59

I used to know a Colette many, many years ago. She spelled it with one 'l', and was very nice. I like it

GladioliBuckets · 27/04/2010 17:45

I quite like it, I would spell it like the author Colette (film of same name about her.) BTW Her real name was Sidonie, you don't get many of those round my way.

pointydog · 27/04/2010 17:55

I quite like it

Prinpo · 27/04/2010 18:31

I like it. Would also use one 'l'.

skidoodly · 27/04/2010 18:33

I hate it

one l

belgo · 27/04/2010 18:37

I've always liked this name.

fromheretomaternity · 27/04/2010 19:27

It's a pretty name. Sounds a little bit French. Def one l only

Niallsangel · 27/04/2010 19:43

My SIL name and I love it. One l.

RipMacWinkle · 27/04/2010 20:00

Definitely one l. I think it's a lovely name

However, am very funny about making sure that the t's are pronounced. Often in our area (Lanarkshire) these get kindof dropped and it sounds less pretty. Don't know if this is a universal UK or specific Lanarkshire issue.

Not quite what you asked.... sorry

doubleexpresso · 27/04/2010 20:09

Lovely classic name. Really love it. One 'l' I'd say...

mathanxiety · 27/04/2010 21:01

I love it -- a beautiful French classic that's not too difficult to pronounce. I'd use one L.

I knew a few in Ireland where the T is pretty soft, and also one in the US, but it sounds lovely and recognisable no matter what the accent. I wouldn't worry about Lanarkshire. And the French T sound is not the same as any English T anyhow.

Shaz10 · 27/04/2010 21:05

My SIL from Ireland is Colette (1 L). It's lovely, and so is she!

castille · 27/04/2010 21:06

I don't like it.

But here in France it's outdated (think Shirley or Brenda) which might be why.

jkklpu · 27/04/2010 21:08

one of my favourite French names - definitely just one 'l'

jasper · 27/04/2010 21:45

absolutely beautiful

colie · 28/04/2010 21:39

Oh, just have to say my parents love this name, which is why it is my name.

appparently it is either french or irish. the french spell it with one l and the irish two l.

My Dad is irish and I know a few Collette's over there. I am scottish and I have never met anyone else with my name here.

Also just moved from Merseyside where I came across another two Colette's. Definately not many Colette's about.

In Ireland there are loads of Colettes, but nearly all in their mid 30s to late 40s. It would be considered a fairly dated name over there.
