Need traditional/classic girls' names, but am very picky!

Hi

I'm only 9 weeks, but I like to plan ahead DH and I have a boy's name we like, but are struggling with girl's names (well, I am anyway!). I like names that are very traditional but classic (timeless rather than old-fashioned) - boring some might say but that have good (and unusual) nicknames, oh, and nothing too girly!

To give you an idea, here are some names that I either like but can't use, or don't like, or am considering but am not sure of:

Elizabeth (DD's name - love it - something like this ideally)
Kathryn (my mum, and same first initial as me, not sure I want to use it)
Rebecca (like it, but one of my cousins used it, plus I don't like the nicknames)
Charlotte (too girly)
Anne (love it, but doesn't sound good with our surname)
Margaret (am considering it because I love the nicknames, but a bit old-fashioned possibly)

Any other ideas? I don't want to decide just yet, but want to get a shortlist in my head that I can mull over whenever I am bored at work I have some free time. If it helps, the boy's name we like is William Thomas (to be known as Billy - I have to plan nicknames too!)

Call her Margot and then let the nick name Maggie evolve [cough] "organically. Cos Maggie is gorgeous.

Yes, Katie, Clara and Maggie! That is the name that is meant to come next. They go really well together.

ELCSadvice · 26/04/2010 11:23

I reckon go for Magdalena if you like Maggie.

Magaly · 26/04/2010 12:28

Or how about Magaly? It is a Portuguese Saint's name... (Much more popular name in mainland europe)

ReneRusso · 26/04/2010 12:38

Margaret is great, deserves a comeback

Lovethesea · 26/04/2010 13:54

If you like Anne but it's not good with one syllable surname then Anna?

Also biblical and fits nicely with your Elizabeth in Luke's gospel :-)

mathanxiety · 26/04/2010 17:46

Kathryn -- love, and love this spelling
Rebecca -- nice, but prefer Rachel
Anne -- nice, also love Annabel
Margaret -- love, also love Madeleine

Suggestions:
Marit (for Margaret -- Marit is Norwegian)
Helena
Laurel
Beatrice
Adela
Letitia
Alice
Josephine
Gisela

I know exactly what you mean. I too, like traditional but not too girly names. My DDs are Elizabeth (Lizzie) and Catherine (Kitty). I'm not so keen on names like Laura as they're just too girly for me plus they cannot be shortened.

If I were to ever have another DD it would be a toss up between;

Rosalind (Ros)
Constance (Connie)
Frances (Fran)
and possibly either Josephine or Josceline with Joss as a NN.

I do also like Margaret, nn Maggie very much but it's my neice's name so I wouldn't use it.

Lorelai · 26/04/2010 20:58

Oooh, Connie - I do like that too.

thesecondcoming - I am liking your mum's taste in names!!

Interesting that there are a few children called Margaret out there - hopefully it is due for a comeback and if I do use it it won't be too unusual in 5 years or so. Plus I would use Daisy as a nickname so that loses the Thatcher connotations a bit.

Of course, all this agonising probably means it will be a boy!
