Im not expecting, just came across this the other day and can honestly say I've never met a Scott in my life, even though it's not an unusual name.
I think I rather like it. Have mentioned it to friends who think it's nice too
Opinions?

debaronz · 25/04/2010 11:06

It's OK but I'm not keen on surnames as first names.

Bucharest · 25/04/2010 11:08

It's awful. It's very 80s/Neighboursy.

There was a flurry of them (along with things like Lee/Craig/Darren ) mid-late 70s. A kind of reaction to traditional David/Simon/Peter type names.

dizzydixies · 25/04/2010 11:22

I know 3 and still think its awful, the youngest being only 3

FrazzleRock · 25/04/2010 11:45

Oh gawd, forgot it's a surname.
I agree, hate surnames as first names

That's put me right off.

er i like it alot so there.

southeastastra · 25/04/2010 11:49

hardly awful for the love of god

dizzydixies · 25/04/2010 11:51

lordy, can we not even use the word awful if its our opinion now?? I've heard my kids names called a lot worse

I know 3 but to me it still conjures up images of an Australian with a bad highlighted mullet marrying a permed up teenage girl - sorry but still all very early 80s imo

janeite · 25/04/2010 11:59

I have only ever met two - one was a hairdresser and one was a bastard who really hurt my friend.

As a name, I don't feel strongly either way about it though. I don't see it as a 'typical surname type name' though and it certainly doesn't have the same connotations for me as names like Taylor or Bailey etc.

I think it's fine, in a vaguely retro sort of way.

5DollarShake · 25/04/2010 14:18

As I Kiwi, I knew a few growing up.

I don't have strong feelings either way, but it probably wouldn't appear on my short-list. I also don't see it as being a typical surname.

Tortoise · 25/04/2010 14:21

It is my 16yr old Brother's name and my DS1's middle name. So, yes, i do like it.

usualsuspect · 25/04/2010 14:23

I like it ..I know quite a few Scotts

FakePlasticTrees · 25/04/2010 15:15

see, yhe only Scott I know was a boy aa grew up near with the loveliest eyes (saw him a couple of years ago and he still had lovely eyes)

It's unusual without being one of those where he will have a lifetime of spelling it over the phone...

(however can sound a bit American)

Fliight · 25/04/2010 15:28

Can't bear it, sorry - bad associations including the bloke who kept harrassing us last year, he has mental health problems poor chap but even so it was traumatic.

I've never known a Scott I really liked. Did you say you aren't pg yet? Ah well I'll let you off then.

padraig · 25/04/2010 15:36

Never known a Scott myself, but it seems to be one of the most common names in America.

lilolilmanchester · 25/04/2010 15:43

I love it, DH hated it, otherwise would have had it for our DS. Knew a lovely Scott who was killed in the Falklands, nothing at all to do with Neighbours

Magaly · 25/04/2010 15:44

I quite like it. I'd suggest Ross instead, that is also a sur name and also a Scottish one, but I prefer it.

Americans might think the name was "Scotch".

Magaly · 25/04/2010 15:46

I like Craig. I think it means stone. It, or a similar sound, occurs in a lot of place names in Ireland and Scotland.

I think Craig is very popular in America too. (for men 40+ though not babies)

FrazzleRock · 25/04/2010 17:27

Well I've got a few years before I'll be ready for another newborn, then another few years before my body will allow me to have another newborn!

OP posts:
FrazzleRock · 25/04/2010 17:31

Not sure about Craig.
I've got thousands of girls names I like but having had two boys, I am 95% certain I'll have another bouncing boy

I've no idea why I'm thinking of baby names!

One of m best friends was called Scott as a kid...and his brother was Craig (they were Scottish) ....i like surnames as first names ....hasn't done the name 'Jack' any harm

FrazzleRock · 25/04/2010 19:18

I have a Jack already. Had no idea it was ever a surname. I've never seen it as a surname

Magnima · 27/04/2010 12:12

My brother is called Scott and I like it. We are Scottish,it was quite common when we were kids. Due for a revival.

toccatanfudge · 27/04/2010 12:13

I know a Scott (actually the fiance of a MNer)

and DS2's middle name is Scott

CurlyCasper · 27/04/2010 12:28

Scott and Craig are as normal as Thomas and Jack in Scotland, IMO, and Scott was popular long before the whole Neighbours thing. I know more Scotts (first name) than I do people with Scott for a surname.
I like it.

Bathsheba · 27/04/2010 14:30

DD3 wouyld have been Scott if she had been a bioy and she is 14 weeks old.

But we are Scottish and live in Scotland so its not a surname here....
