Ted - help me think of good cultural reference points

DS1 is Arthur, which I love as a name and also because there are so many great Arthurs in literature and popular culture.

DS2 is due in July and Ted is the only name DH and I agree on. Bit silly, but I'd like to think of some good Teds but can only think of Ted Hughes. Can you suggest any others?

Depends on what you think of as good, but I can give you famous:
Ted Heath
Ted Turner (the US media tycoon)
Teddy Roosevelt
Ted Kennedy
Teddy Sheringham
Ted Danson (the guy from Cheers)
Ted Baker (the T-shirt brand)
Ted Dexter (the cricketer)

Not sure if any of these will do the trick for you....

padraig · 24/04/2010 15:25

I know one Ted, but it might ruin the name for you, which would be unfortunate because I think Ted is a great name.

On the plus side, there are teddy bears

Fourleaf · 24/04/2010 16:27

Bill and Ted?!
Perhaps not...

cloelia · 24/04/2010 17:10

what about the nice guy in Little Women? Wasn't he a Lawrence called Teddy or am I making this up? I think it is a good strong simple name but you could always name him Edward and just use Ted from the start.

BettyButterknife · 24/04/2010 18:48

Ah, yes - I'd forgotten Roosevelt. He was a Theodore, wasn't he? I think I'd be more tempted to give Theodore as his formal name with Ted as his name from the start, as I'm not keen on Edward - too many useless-royal connotations for me

Just thought of Father Ted too

Ted Dwane. from Mumford and sons. Great name.

petitmaman · 24/04/2010 18:54

Not that cultural as such but great music.

Clary · 24/04/2010 18:56

Ahh Betty, I love the name Arthur

And my dad was Ted. So you can have him. He was very very funny and a great teacher of chemistry. He was never famous but I think he enriched a few lives.

(his actual name was Edwin tho, Ted is a nickname really IMO)

Clary · 24/04/2010 18:57

BTW which Arthurs did you reference for DS1 (nosey)

onebatmother · 24/04/2010 19:02

Ted is a very Late Victorian/Edwardian name - always sounds to me like a name that DH Lawrence might have used - Arthur does too. I think they go together brilliantly.

moondog · 24/04/2010 19:03

The Fast Show Ted was a cracker.

onebatmother · 24/04/2010 19:16

The Fast Show Ted was definitely Edwardian

BettyButterknife · 24/04/2010 19:52

Ooh, so many brilliant Arthurs:

Arthur Miller
Arthur Ransome
Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Lee - singer from Love
Arthur Dent - Hitch-hiker's guide
Arthur Fonzarelli - Happy Days
Arthur Guinness

erm... King Arthur??

My eyes have gone funny now, and the spelling of Arthur looks all wrong

Fab name, great choice

caen · 24/04/2010 20:19

Bundy

Sorry couldn't help myself

cyteen · 24/04/2010 20:20

It's just Father Ted all the way for me.

Clary · 24/04/2010 20:27

Ahh interesting re Arthurs.

I have another in mind but better not say as he's a bit controversial (a lot of people don't think he was a great figure, let us say. Think red red red )

ludog · 24/04/2010 21:52

That's mad Ted!

Nice, dashing Laurie in "Little Women" is called Teddy by Jo.

nessmay · 26/04/2010 14:36

SuperTed! Think it's a great name, so many serious points of reference, but fun one's too

jasper · 26/04/2010 14:39

`trully fab name

putyoursocksON · 26/04/2010 15:00

I have a Ted (Theodore). And a William. In my mind they're named after Teddy Lawrence in Little Women and Will in the Amber Spyglass. In DH's mind they're named after Bill and Ted. Sigh.

willow5 · 27/04/2010 05:21

I have a Teddy (Theodore). At nursery they write their names on nappies. When he was home and I was going to change him they had written 'super Ted' on his nappy - made me smile!

CakeandRoses · 27/04/2010 11:49

Ted is gorgeous! I like Clary's Pa's name of Edwin as a birth cert version. Or would Edmund do the trick? Theodore is good but getting quite popular which you might not be happy with given you've gone for less common names with Arthur and Ted.

Can't think of any Teds that haven't already been mentioned (surprising how many there are tho). fyi, Kennedy was the first one that sprung to mind when I first saw your post.

willow5: that's made me too
