We have thought long and hard about a girls name and have (finally) agreed on Abby.

I know there will be some who say we should just go for Abigail with Abby as a shortened name but I really Abby just as it is.

Will we regret it?

I like Abigail with Abby for short (sorry)

bunnymother · 23/04/2010 19:53

Same, I also like Abigail w Abby for short. Whenever I hear Abigail I just think "beguiling", such a lovely name.

southeastastra · 23/04/2010 19:53

abby crunch hmm they were nice biscuits

BleachedWhale · 23/04/2010 19:54

Not Abi?

It's fine, anyway.

Nothing to regret.

BudaisintheZONE · 23/04/2010 19:57

I like it but I would five Abigail on birth cert to give her options when she is older. It's a very pretty name.

CarGirl · 23/04/2010 19:58

Abigail means "father's joy" which makes me feel a bit sad that Abi's have a name that means "father"!

Lovely name besides that though.

Does Abigail or Abby sounds better with your surname though?

debaronz · 23/04/2010 19:58

I like it, although I do prefer Abigail with Abby for short, and people might assume it's short for Abigail. What's putting you off using Abigail?

debaronz · 23/04/2010 19:59

I prefer the Abi spelling.

waitingforbedtime · 23/04/2010 20:09

Personally I prefer Abbie.

My friend is Becky (ie not Rebecca) and even though she loves Becky she wishes she was Rebecca to be formal sometimes.

rubyslippers · 23/04/2010 20:10

Abigail is a beautiful name with Abi as an NN

QueenofDreams · 23/04/2010 20:11

DP's 4yo sister is called Abbi. Just Abbi - although people tend to assume she's shortened from Abigail.

imahappycamper · 23/04/2010 20:12

Lots of Abbies around. It has been really popular hear for quite some time (Abbie next door is 11). I love the meaning of Abigail and would have had it for DC3 if it had been a girl.

imahappycamper · 23/04/2010 20:21

Oops sp. here

henry37 · 23/04/2010 20:23

i like it dont think its as popular as it was a few years ago.

AbFabT · 23/04/2010 20:27

Glad so many people like it! I am an Abigail/Abi - Abby is fine, but I very glad my parents gave me Abigail so I could have a few options.

southeastastra, mmm, those biscuits were amazing! Whatever happened to them!

AquaBoo · 23/04/2010 22:21

I agree with you that Abby is lovely on its own, just as it is.
If you're concerned about her not having options when she's older there's nothing to stop her calling herself Abigail, unofficially. Though I think Abby works well as an adult name, too.

muminthemiddle · 24/04/2010 09:41

I know a couple of Abbys-not Abigails so seems fine to me.

tigersmummy · 04/05/2010 21:25

I am an Abby (christened Abigail) and much prefer Abby - I NEVER use Abigail as absolutely hate it, and like the spelling I use (although my Mum spelt it Abi when I was younger and I went through phase of spelling it Abbie). Don't know anyone else with same name - go for it!

McDreamy · 04/05/2010 21:31

I have an Abbie, shortened from Abigail. Really suits DD and don't know any others around here.

We knew an Abbey (not Abigail) when we lived abroad. You should go with your gut instinct although I have a name that could be longer and have spent a lifetime saying "No, it's just , it's not short for " but tbh it's hardly a problem

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 04/05/2010 21:35

I like Abigail woth Abbie for short - I think it's a lovey name, so pretty.

RubiMama · 04/05/2010 21:40

I love Abby (but would spell it Abi) and personally think Abigail is an awful name so wouldn't hesitate in just using the shortened version. Go for it and congratulations!

preggersplayspop · 04/05/2010 21:46

I like Abby, but Abigail on the birth certificate. Good for when she is being naughty and you can say in a stern voice 'Ab-i-gail!' (the elongated version of names always works well for letting children know you mean business, or it did in our family anyway!)
