'Frilly' name lover - I need help!

DH and I are at a total stalemate with girl's names for DC2 (due July), altho we're sorted for a boy's name and I'm starting to hope we have another boy just so the name isn't an issue!

The couple of girl's names we partially-agreed on have issues with them which mean we probably can't use them (Violet is the name of a much disliked relative of his and Delilah semi-rhymes with our surname). The only one still on the table is Clementine but we're not absolutely sure in the way we are with the boy's name we've chosen.

I adore frilly girl's names such as Aurelia, Angelica and Arabella (they don't actually have to begin with an A too tho!) whereas DH can't bear them. He doesn't actually seem to love many girl's names but his fave is Matilda, which is not my kind of thing at all (and the nns Tilly etc really aren't.)

As DH isn't likely to ever go for one of the frilly names I adore, I've decided I might as well try to talk myself out of the idea! I've realised that I wouldn't want to choose a lovely, long name if everyone (including us) just shortened it to a nn anyway, unless I also loved the nn - and there's not actually many nns that I do love.

I'm keen to know if you've got a DD with a long name and whether you almost always use a nn?

I guess ideally, we'd find a one or two-syllable name we both loved and wouldn't tend to be shortened but all the ones we like are now too popular for us to want to choose (e.g. Lily, Rose, Ruby) as we'd prefer a name which isn't in the top 50 or even 100 ideally.

HELP please!

Is it possible to "defrill" any of your names to a version that you both like?

Roseline?

Our children´s names weren´t popular when we used them but are more so now.

I like Delilah-Della?
Ella?
Or Juliet?

mackerel · 23/04/2010 12:13

I love Clementine as a name.

padraig · 23/04/2010 14:44

I agree with your DH. Frilly names ought to be illegal.

Also agree with the idea of 'defrilling' the names you do like.

For example, instead of Delilah how about Dahlia or Delia?

I prefer names that are a bit stronger, but I do like Cordelia, Susannah, Julia, Celia, Christabel and maybe there could be some overlap between strong and frilly on some of those names.

If you like Clememtine, how about Clemency?

CuppaTeaJanice · 23/04/2010 17:01

I don't really understand - to me Matilda is frillier than Arabella. Tilly even rhymes with Frilly!!

Maybe it would help if you let us know your list of possible names, and your DHs list.

dustycups · 23/04/2010 17:15

What CuppaTeaJanice said.

our little girl is faith, we would never shorten it but i suppose faye could be a nn?

our thinking being its cute for a baby/toddler, trendy/fashionalbe for teenager and still strong enough for an adult...

Not to popular either which we liked

LynetteScavo · 23/04/2010 21:13

You like the same names as me....DH suggested Lara, and I thought THAT'S IT, until said it with our surname.

No idea where it is in the top 100.

I know what your DH means..Matilda is a more solid name...how about Alice or Florence?

padraig · 23/04/2010 21:19

Must admit I do like the name Faith despite my adversion to all things religious.

It's probably only because of Buffy the Vampire Slayer though.

I am also a lover of "frilly" names . When PG with DD after 2 DS's, he was utterly against my "frilly" name. I wore him down though and he finally relented!!

She is a Tallulah often called Lula or Lulu by the DH!

Beasknees · 23/04/2010 22:06

i too was going to suggest Beatrice, not frilly but great nicknames

Charlotte
Alice
Magdalen
Guinevere
Delphine is defiently flowery and frilly
Susanna

TabithaTwitchet · 23/04/2010 22:12

I think Clementine is lovely, and it would definitely have been on my shortlist (but DH said no). I wouldn't call it "frilly" though - possibly what people think of as frilly is far too subjective.

Anyway, DD has a 3 syllable name (as do I, and my sister), nobody ever uses nicknames with any of us (and I have made it to 30 without having a nn, so it is possible )

Why does it matter if your name is in the top 50 names?
These things change so rapidly that what is popular now probably won't be in say 5 years time.
The other thing to remember is that there are 1000s of names so even if a name is top 50 it isn't actually that common iyswim?
The only consideration I made was that I wouldn't choose a name that my close relatives/friends had chosen as you are seeing their dcs a lot.
I too like frilly names and long names and my dh wasn't as keen so we had to compromise.
Also I call my dcs by their full name and so do others as people tend to follow your lead, so it isn't always true that an Arabella for example will be called Bella.

cloelia · 24/04/2010 17:14

debaronz says in her list Louisa, and that is our dd's name; we all love it; it is never shortened, is quite girly but also does not have an obvious stereotype; it is also not that common but easy to say and not misheard; we have a horrid surname (sorry, DH) and it gentles that up a bit.

How about Evangeline? I think that's pretty and quite a strong name?
