Florence - am put off by Flo

Julia - Close relative called Julie

Sophia - Close relative called Sophie

Poppy - don't think it suits an adult

Rosa - Blends into surname, sounds like Rosalie

Already have an Eva.

Would love suggestions as I cannot find one girls name I love that I can use

I have a Florence and she is known as Floss/Flossie no one has ever called her Flo...!

telsa · 23/04/2010 22:08

Why not Hester - nickname Hetty.
or Juliana, Judy, Juniper.

janeite · 23/04/2010 22:12

Hester is gorgeous.

bytheMoonlight · 24/04/2010 09:04

...yet spotty! It's more an adult nn I feel.

Not keen on Hester

Why not just call her Hattie?
Agree that Sophia is not too similar to Sophie.

bytheMoonlight · 24/04/2010 10:32

Wouldn't people assume Hattie was short for Harriet?

How is Sophia normally pronounced; Soph-ee-a or Soph-eye-a?

I always thought the first was the norm but if its the second then its a definite consideration

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 24/04/2010 11:00

I would assume Sophia was Sophee-a. You could spell it Sofia if you want Sof-eye-a.

How about Alethea - pronounced al-uh-thea
Beatrix as an option - maybe Trixie as a nn.

I was going to suggest Juliet in the first post but thought it was too similar to Julie, sorry.

what about Rhianna?
or Rowena?
Rosita?
Rosina?
Roxanna?

bytheMoonlight · 24/04/2010 13:00

I really like Sofia

debaronz · 24/04/2010 13:23

I know of a Sophia pronounced Sof-eye-a. I think you can choose either pronunciation.

vickyob · 24/04/2010 18:35

Ive got a Poppy so iam biased but I couldnt see it as an adult name till a lady came into work called Poppy. It helped that she was stunning and I decided then and there thst DD1 was Poppy - I got the usual criticism that its a baby/dog/cat/common name but I loved it enough to not care. 5 Years later I still love it and glad I wasnt swayed.
I also love Florence but a put of by Flo, someone I know nn their Florence Florrie before anyone else started calling her Flo.

thumbwitch · 24/04/2010 19:36

debaronz, you can of course choose either pronunciation for Sophia but I believe people in general will opt for Soph-ee-a if they see it spelt Sophia. So the OP's DD would then be ocrrecting them much of the time.

mathanxiety · 24/04/2010 20:15

I love Juliet, and I think it goes really well with Eva. I think it has a lovely Elizabethan vibe, whereas Julie is quite 70s.

I also love Antonia, Astrid, Alicia, Zoe, Theodora and Eliza.

I really dislike Flo as a nn for Florence.

bytheMoonlight · 24/04/2010 22:01

Antonia is beautiful

I know someone with an Eva and a Scarlett. Think they go really well together. Sounds like Charlotte too! What do u think?

WantageWife · 25/04/2010 16:00

I have an "Ava" already and am facing the same name issues... all the good ones are taken / too close to friends names etc. Also, I wanted to get something to sound completely different to Ava so wanted to steer clear of names ending in "a". Anyway, first we had Imogen, then Megan, then Brooke, now we think we have come to a decision with Seren (pronounced like the beginning of Serendipity). It means "star" in Welsh, but is also a nod to where we spent some of our honeymoon - the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Florence is one of my favourite names though, and it can be shortened to anything you want it to be as long as you set the standard!! Florrie is cute....

cece · 25/04/2010 16:14

Nadia?

nighbynight · 25/04/2010 16:59

Florence is a lovely name. Has anyone suggested Flora?

or Daisy (on the flowers theme)

frazzledali · 28/04/2010 15:53

I know a very wonderful adult called Poppy, she is bright and artistic and her name just couldn't suit her more...

kateyfer · 28/04/2010 17:14

Amelia
Olivia
Imogen

sophieandbelly · 29/04/2010 21:24

Dysgu · 29/04/2010 21:51

Another vote here for Florence. DD1 is Florence Amelie and we call her Florrie - therefore everyone else calls her Florrie (apart from my mum who does use Flo sometimes but that's Nanna's for you!)

DD2 is Gabriella Eve - and I love both of their names.

Other suggestions:

Lucy
Abigail
Rhianna
Amelia
Georgina
Georgia

rocketupbum · 29/04/2010 21:53

notnearlyasblondasiwas · 29/04/2010 21:59
