Have I backed myself into a corner?

Hi all
Just found out I'm expecting baby #3. We're thrilled about it but already wondering about names, even though I'm not due til December (Christmas eve to be exact!)

Anyway I already have a Jacob and Isaac so obviously a really modern name is out but do you think I need to stick with Biblical names? Think I may have backed myself into a corner!

For boys there are several that I love such as Noah, Ezra (and Samuel though a lot of those about where we are so less keen) but am not so excited about Biblical girls names. Could I get away with a non-Biblical name for a girl? Any suggestions?

Well I am one of 5 and 4 of us have Biblical names and my Dsis does not.

Yours are more Biblical than our names - think Tom, Sam, David, Suzannah but I think you could as long as it's not Mercedes or Cherise!!

Also I think a name like Max would suit your other two boy names.

Jacob, Isaac and Max

Jacob, Isaac and Finn

Jacob, Isaac and Alfie

Jacob, Isaac and Annabel

Jacob, Isaac and Romilly! (Love Romilly)

Nevergoogle · 18/04/2010 14:14

You can name your baby whatever you like.

What girls names do you like?

twolittlemonkeys · 18/04/2010 14:41

Thanks for the suggestions.

Recently I've been wondering about the name Meredith but it may be too much of a mouthful for her brothers to pronounce. Could use Merry or even Meg as a nn, as initials would probably be MEG.

Elizabeth is ok, I love the nns Libby, Ellie or Beth but not keen on Lizzie or Liz, even though one of my best friends is Lizzie. I liked Amelie though DH not so keen.

There are also quite a range of girls names that are biblical - from Anna, Susannah, Ruth, Naomi, Sarah, Rachel, etc to Kezia, Tamar, Jemima.

Something might jump out at you!

kando · 18/04/2010 16:29

We call dd3 (Elizabeth) Betty - she loves it and so do we! Romilly is a fantastic name btw

merryandmad · 18/04/2010 16:39

Love Meredith- its is the name we chose for dd2 and she loves it.
We use the nick name Merry aswell.
She is the only Meredith we know, but everyone knows how it spell it, so works out well.

But I shall let you know the downsides aswell.

  1. People asking if you liked Grey's Anatomy- apparently the lead role is Meredith.
  1. We have to sing We wish you a Merry Christmas" with all her nursery friend class names in aswell, eg, we Wish you a Maisie Christmas, We wish you a Susie Christmas... but perhaps you won't!

But it is a fab name x

twolittlemonkeys · 18/04/2010 16:47

Thanks for the reassurance merryandmad. I love the fact that it's not a very widely used name but is easy to spell and there aren't lots of variations.

Thanks Lovethesea. I have looked through a complete list of biblical girls names and none of them jump out at me, though I have another 8 months to change my mind.

Hmmm, am still liking Meredith the most, think it goes well enough with the Old Testament boys names. If I have another boy though I reckon I'll stick with biblical as there are loads of names I like.

Doesn't have to be biblical, any Hebrew name would match the boys' ones.

AbFabT · 18/04/2010 18:48

Congratulations! If you land on Christmas Day, you could go with Dominic for a boy or Dominique for a girl, as they mean 'Day of the Lord'!

telsa · 18/04/2010 21:08

What about Jessamy for a girl. It sounds Hebraic, but isn't. Anyway, it is my current favourite name.

DinahRod · 18/04/2010 21:15

How about Charlotte - and use Lottie which is almost biblical! Well, it's my reasoning if this one is a girl (have two older dcs with biblical names)

Merry/Meredith is also a favourite of mine, but unfortunately sounds a bit lispy with our surname.

Other option might be to look at Puritan or virtue names for a girl.

But there's no law that days her name has to be biblical

blackcurrants · 18/04/2010 21:48

my DN is "Miriam" in a very biblically-named family. Her big brother (now 5!) calls her "Miree!" and it's very cute.

slhilly · 18/04/2010 21:55

Um, Blackcurrants, Miriam is a biblical name. Sister of Moses. Incidentally, Miri is a common contraction of Miriam.

blackcurrants · 19/04/2010 00:47

Yeah, that was my point, slhilly, I just didn't make it very clearly!

I was suggesting another biblical name that I like which might go with her two DCs...

Must concentrate before posting!

i think as you push something the size of a melon out of your fandango - you have the right to call it starburst rainbow fruitloop should you so wish.

i have a two biblical boys names and a non biblical yes traditional girls name.

at custardo. I quite like Miriam, but a close friend's daughter is called Miriam (she's one of 7 kids, all have biblical names except 1 of the boys). So thought Miriam is a bit too unusual for us to use too.

My 4 all have very different names. Irish/biblical and 'run of the mill'

sweetkitty · 19/04/2010 15:37

My 3 girls have biblical names but they are not immediately obvious.

There are loads of nice girls biblical names and you could get away with a lovely traditional name as well

I know a Jacob, Isaac and Sarah as siblings

Hannah
Leah
Rachel
Ruth
Elizabeth
Abigail
Naomi
Susannah
Anna
Grace
Mary
Beth any
Beth

Surely you must have Eve if you have her on Xmas Eve or Holly for Xmas Day

LadyOfTheFlowers · 19/04/2010 17:59

What Kitty said!
She explained the biblical but not obvious bit much better!

One is very obvious
One isn't
One is Irish

so all quite different.

sweetkitty · 19/04/2010 20:00

twolittlemonkeys - as it happens we are "stealing" one of your boys name for our soon to be DS. Two of our girls names are on that list and you would not think the three of them had biblical names at all.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 20/04/2010 05:57

I like your boys names. Or what about

Evan
Matthew

Girls:

Leah
Lydia
Rose
Mercy

diddl · 20/04/2010 08:44

Jethro & Hebe?

weegiemum · 20/04/2010 08:48

Go for Rachel! Old Testament but also modern and clearly one of the nicest girls names out there (am on a mission - my dd2 is Rachel!).

(tongue in cheek) if you have an Isaac and a Jacob then surely the next one should be Joseph?

APassionateWoman · 20/04/2010 08:51

You could get away with any type of girl's name, I think.

For a boy, if not biblical, then go for something classic. Not a 'fashion' name.

I know Samuel is popular, but it is lovely and goes beautifully with Jacob and Isaac.

Reuben
Joseph
Tobias
Zachary
Nathaniel
Asher
Ephraim
Gabriel
Silas
Gideon
Benjam in
Daniel
Joshua
Jude
Elijah / Elias
