Opinions please

I think I like the name, but just wondering what others think of it.

Thanks

I think a lot of people would call him Reuben and you'd have to continually correct people -
"Hello Reuben", "No, it's ReuVen", "What?", "ReuVEN!"

Sounds like rueful as well as too similar to Reuben.

honeybunmum · 13/04/2010 13:17

Is it a typo? My SIL just named her boy 'Rueben', I found it as 'Reuben' or 'Ruben' and couldn't work out if she was being 'different' or just stupid.
Sorry, haven't heard of 'Reuven' but agree with chick people will get it wrong.

Helenastar · 13/04/2010 13:20

Oh no!! Reuven,, I used to work with a man called Reuven and He was well, just sooo weird, sorry, that is not very helpful is it.

daisyj · 13/04/2010 13:22

Reuven is the Hebrew form of Reuben. I love Reuben, but Reuven isn't really doing it for me, unless you're Israeli, in which case, I say go for it!

lovechoc · 13/04/2010 13:23

ok, I can imagine DH will think the same then. I haven't heard of anyone called Reuven (and yes, this is the spelling I meant) in RL but our one syllable surname begins with a B and not sure it really goes with Reuben, IYKSWIM? Another poster suggested Reuven, but appears many would struggle with the name, pronouncing it or mistaking it for Reuben.

Lovely name. I know a very nice Reuven (actually Ruven). He never gets mistaken for a Reuben.

crumpette · 13/04/2010 13:36

Personally I would go for Reuben. Or Ruben. Not Reuven, it sounds and looks like a typo and you will always have to correct people. I know someone who called her DS Vertran.. everyone mistakes it for Bertram or similar. She really really regrets it.

I think Reuben goes OK with a one syllable B surname. The 'v' will trip people up. B is good. Think ''Ruben Blades'' a pretty cool latin jazz musician

TaurielTest · 13/04/2010 13:37

I like it actually, unusual. I like quite a lot of trad Jewish names, but we're not Jewish, and DP vetoed them...
Would you pronounce it ROO-ven or ROY-ven? I think the latter would be the authentic Hebrew pronunciation (?) but ROO-ven probably the anglicised version.

lovechoc · 13/04/2010 14:06

thanks crumpette in regards to the comment on the jazz musician - I was wondering how I would find out if Reuben would go with our surname by finding out other examples but you've shown that it does go fairly well and it wouldn't be tooooo problematic...still thinking about it more and more these days and can't shake the name Reuben off! I suppose he would only be using first name majority of the time anyway, and occasionally will have to say full name.

DH very keen on Reuben have yet to ask his opinion on Reuven since it was only suggested by another poster today on another thread.

I'm now a bit put off Reuven because it's not as mainstream as Reuben and appreciate the honest comments about it - better to know now before registering the birth in a few month's time!

I love Reuven. Much more interesting than Reuben. I know someone called Reuven and people don't make mistakes with it. And it any event Reuven is the Hebrew pronunciation/form of Reuben so you can interchange them if it becomes a problem or your son doesn't like the "v".

ZacharyQuack · 16/04/2010 02:56

I think any name that rhymes with Groovin' has got to be a winner.
