Finding it impossible

to find a name i like that can't be shortened to something i don't like.
For instance i love Annaliese, but don't love it shortened to Anne or Annie.
I love Eloise but don't like it shortened to Lou.
I love Elysia, but don't like it shortened to El, or Ellie.
Anyone else have this problem ?
Or is it just my silly pregnancy hormones
Can anyone suggest any names that are less likey to be shortened ? Would be very greatful.
Girls names mostly as i alreday know which boys names i quite like.
Thanks.

a very short name

allyfe · 13/04/2010 10:22

I think to some degree, if you don't shorten a name, then that is what the child will be called. It may be shortened by friends at school, but ultimately it will probably revert back as they get older.

Incidentally, I've never heard of Eloise shortened to Lou. The one I knew was Elly. But became Eloise again when she was older because that was what her family called her.

I already have 3 daughters Paige Bethany, Imogen Maria and Summer Eloise, so not sure if something really short would fit ?
That said i've not been able to come up with any names i really like yet
I think having 3 girls already i've used up most of the girls names i liked.
In which case maybe i should hope for a boy

I managed to find my 3 boys names I liked that couldn't be shortened.

For my daughter (due thurs) I gave up and chose a name I liked with a shortening I don't find too bad. I can live with it easily but I personally will call her by her full name.

It was so difficult and I was getting really stressed. She willl get a nickname at school when she is older anyway I'm sure.

Anneliese, Eloise and Elyssia are all going to be shortened. All the EL names morph into Ellie as far as I can see anyway. But Anneliese could be Liese (Leeze) or Leeza or Lee.

My name is Josephine, and it didn't get shortened to Jo until University. My family always called me Josephine, and that was it, everyone followed. If you like a longer name, just make sure you and your family use the full name and I'm sure it will stick

SqueezyB · 14/04/2010 15:06

what's wrong with a name being shortened anyway? My name can be shortened easily and I quite like it - there's something nice about having both a formal name and a nickname! DH has a short one-syllable name that can't really be shortened and he doesn't like it.

cyteen · 14/04/2010 15:15

Miranda

Violet5 · 14/04/2010 16:06

Hi, thanks for all the suggestions
just added Miranda to my list.

Nothing wrong with names being shortened, just i'd prefer that if it was going to be shortened as names usually are that it was shortened to something that i don't mind.

My own name has always been shortened, rarely get called by my actual name, unless i'm in trouble

I think Annaliese is quite a long name, and so fairly likely to be shortened.

My DD is Eloise, and she has a friend who is also Eloise. Neither girl shortens their name. I have previously taught two other (teenage) Eloises - one was called Eloise, and the other shortened it to Ellie. So of the four I know, only one actually shortened her name. Incidentally, my DD is most insistent that she is not Ellie / Ella etc to distinguish herself from all the Ellies / Ellas etc at school. In a sense, having Ellie / Ella so popular, has actually made her insistent that people should use her full name!

I also wouldn't think that Elysia is likely to be shortened to El either, although to avoid that, you could go for Alicia.

Tbh, I would say it is a good idea to think of the shortenings, as once they get independent, they choose their nicknames, so it is good to avoid a name with a shortening you hate, as it will be out of your control!
