Rebecca

DH and I have finally found a girls name we both love - Rebecca. Only problem is I'm not sure if it goes with our surname - she would be Rebecca Barker.

Can't decide whether I quite like the alliteration, or if it's too much of a mouthful! Opinions please?

I like it! Our dd has the same name and surname Park, so nut as much of a mouthful. I know another Robinson.

violethill · 12/04/2010 10:16

Becky Barker is a bit of a mouthful though!

SqueezyB · 12/04/2010 10:28

hmm, that's what I thought - plus when I tried the name out on my 2-year-old she could only say 'Becca' - which is really cute but then if that NN sticks, Becca Barker is even more of a mouthful!

But I do love the name, and it's the first girls name that we have agreed on!

Hmm. I'm not sure, if I'm really honest. Rebecca Barker is a bit of a tongue twister....
And as you say so is Becca Barker

However if you absolutely 100% love a name I believe you should always go for it. I can't imagine the thought of naming your child a name that you don't adore and feel proud of.

What other names have you had in mind?

bruffin · 12/04/2010 10:35

I have a Rebecca as well sith surname westbrook the west breaks it up a bit

Are you going to have a middle name

bruffin · 12/04/2010 10:36

DD is known as Bex, Becca and Becky

Bucharest · 12/04/2010 10:42

Oh dear. Am torn on this one, because Rebecca is beautiful, classy, timeless, elegant.
But I think it does sort of blend into your surname. (I said it aloud and it comes out as Rebecca Parker for some reason)

Ho hum.

Nah, go for it, people will just have to learn not to mash it into your surname!

SqueezyB · 12/04/2010 10:48

The only other name that we both like is Imogen - DH loves it but to be honest I've gone off it a bit! Otherwise I'm very keen on Tess but DH isn't so keen.

We both like nice classic girls names that aren't too popular or too 'out there', iykwim. I also want to avoid a -y or -ie ending, as DD is Polly, and I think Polly and Lucy/Maisie/Lily etc sounds a bit twee.

I thought I'd gone through them all and then Rebecca suddenly occured to me the other night and we both loved it! And I thought we had one of those surnames that would go with anything

How about Melissa?

differentnameforthis · 12/04/2010 10:55

A friend has a Rebecca & her surname is Parker.

CirrhosisByTheSea · 12/04/2010 11:07

Well personally I think Imogen is gorgeous (and way prettier than Rebecca!!) Imogen and Polly sound like sisters as well, to me......

(lovely name Polly btw)

On Imogen, do you know why you've gone off it at all? any particular reason?

pointydog · 12/04/2010 11:12

Rebecca Barker sounds just fine

5DollarShake · 12/04/2010 11:22

Rebecca Barker sounds absolutely fine, and is quite memorable in a way. A great name for a child and an adult. You can imagine a writer or some such with that name.

Rebecca is a beautiful name. I WAY prefer it to Imogen, but then I don't get all the fuss over Imogen.

franke · 12/04/2010 11:24

Sounds okay to me

Rockbird · 12/04/2010 11:47

Sounds fine to me. Seriously, I never understand this obsession with getting the names to match, aside from the Richard Head type scenarios

blue22 · 12/04/2010 13:14

Rebecca is a beautiful name - go for it.
If you decide against it - how about
Helena
Rosalind
Rosamund
Louisa
Laura
Katharine

Tess is great too

swanandduck · 12/04/2010 13:35

My dd is Tessa and often shortened to Tess. I also love the name Imogen. Both would be lovely with Polly. To be honest, while I think Rebecca is a lovely name it's very popular at the moment and she will probably be one of many at school.

Iklboo · 12/04/2010 13:41

I like Rebecca (although I knew a Ribekah) and DS would have been Imoigen if he'd come out without the dangly bits

LOOBYLOU2 · 12/04/2010 13:46

My youngest is Rebecca and our surname is Pattison - I had a brief concern over the two lots of three syllables - lasted about a day tbh!
It was my fave of the three names we actually agreed on. Now 2 she calls herself 'Becca Pants!

mathanxiety · 12/04/2010 17:05

I honestly wouldn't use it with your surname, although it's a lovely name.

I think you need to avoid B and K sounds. Barker is a surname that calls for a softer-sounding first name, imo.

Have you considered Rachel?

thirtysomething · 12/04/2010 17:20

Love the name but it isn't easy with your surname - a bit of a mouthful.Tess would be lovely with the surname and is a beautiful name.

How about:
Natasha
Hannah
Laura
Esther
Harriet
Elena
Alice
Susannah

KAEKAE · 12/04/2010 17:34

Nope don't think it works with your surname, its just too much.

SqueezyB · 12/04/2010 17:42

LOL at the thought of Polly and Esther - can just see myself in the supermarket calling out 'Polyester!!' Thanks for the suggestions though!

Thanks for the opinions, am still undecided so I guess it might just go on the list until he/she is born - kinda hoping it's a boy as we've got a boys name sorted!

Rebecca is a really lovely name and I think it sounds fine with Barker although Becca Barker is maybe a bit much!

I also like Imogen a lot but you hear it so often these days that I think Rebecca would be more unusual and refreshing to see on a new baby.
