sorry little sister called her cat Arwen.....

wukter · 06/04/2010 23:24

I LOVE it, and wanted it for DD1 but DP said it's the name of Liv Tyler's character in Lord of the Rings.

tootootired · 06/04/2010 23:24

I went to college with an Arwen, I didn't know the association with Tolkein then but thought it was a classy and interesting name.

seaturtle · 06/04/2010 23:24

Love it. But I'm biased. If DS had been a girl her middle name would have been Arwen. It means "noble lady."

GeekyGirl · 06/04/2010 23:26

Oh wow! Fantastic and unusual without being naff. Go for it.

I prevented myself on the grounds that it's just too geeky, but it is a lovely name.

lowrib · 06/04/2010 23:51

Lovely name

JoggingJemma · 07/04/2010 00:05

Wow it's more popular than I thought, when dh suggested it I thought it might be a bit 'out there'.

DH is over the moon

I'm confused. The only Arwen I know is a great big Welsh bloke. Why would his parents have called him "noble lady"?????

passionberry · 07/04/2010 12:55

DilysPrice - Lol, me too! It's just a bit too role-play!

Bathbaby · 07/04/2010 14:44

I think it's a fab name - go for it!

pipinmybelly · 07/04/2010 17:05

its a beautiful name, and its welsh!!xx

Jamieandhismagictorch · 07/04/2010 17:27

I like it too. And the Tolkien link is cool, IMO

Psammead · 08/04/2010 11:02

Was a strong contender for DD's middle name - was too foreign sounding for us as a first name (not in UK) - we went with Rowan in the end as her mn, but I'll always love Arwen.

skidoodly · 08/04/2010 11:06

beautiful, but now am wondering if a boys' name as per pixie

wukter · 08/04/2010 12:27

AFAIK boys names are spelt with a Y in Welsh so the masculine form would be Arwyn.
Somebody Welsh should confirm this though

pixiestix · 08/04/2010 13:12

Ahaha! That makes a lot of sense Wukter. I am now that I have probably been spelling the poor sod's name wrong all this time.

OrmRenewed · 08/04/2010 13:15

Like it. And the LOTR connection just makes it better IMO

WitchyWooWoo · 08/04/2010 13:41

i agree with the tolkien connection. makes it soo much better.. this will be a firm contender if we have a dd

have heard rohan for a boy as well. _ love it!

giagindi · 09/04/2010 06:32

I love the name Arwen; it's quite similar to the name we're going with for our daughter. I used to know sisters whose names were Arwen and Bryony. What are you thinking for a middle name?

seeker · 09/04/2010 06:57

It's not, as far as I know, a Welsh name - that's Arwyn, which is a boy's name.

The name was, I think, made up by Tolkein for Arwen Undomiel.

SqueezyB · 09/04/2010 08:26

I think it's lovely!

Another similar Welsh name you might like is Anwen.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 09/04/2010 08:28

I really like it, but the LOTR connection kills it for me. I have many and varied rules about baby naming, and "never name your child after a fictional character" is one of them, and I just know some people would assume I did.

That said, you may well not be as ridiculous as I am, in which case I think you should go for it.

seeker · 09/04/2010 08:34

Waiting for a Welsh person to confirm that it's not a Welsh name, just a Middle-Earth one!
