What do you think? I'm leaning more towards Samantha as cuter and more nn potential.

middle name will be Marie whatever the first name.

I prefer Selina. They both work with Marie though.

mathanxiety · 07/04/2010 00:09

I like Samantha, but would like to suggest Serena.

CelticStarlight · 07/04/2010 00:17

I much prefer Selina, I think Samantha is a bit 70s, but it's pretty enough.

lifeas3plus1 · 07/04/2010 08:15

I prefer Selina. There where about 14 Samantha's in my year at school but then we were born in the big Samantha Fox year.

I love Mathanxiety's suggestion of Serena.

Peaceflower · 07/04/2010 08:20

To me, Samantha = fun, outgoing
Selina = grace, beauty, reserved, feline

Serena is lovely.

But any of the above would be a great choice.

piscesmoon · 07/04/2010 08:31

Selina but prefer Serena. Samantha says 1970's.

allyfe · 07/04/2010 09:34

Samantha also still feels very 70's/80's to me, and STILL reminds me of sam fox!?! But I don't think it would on a little child.

minimoos · 07/04/2010 09:35

Thank you all, Serena is lovely too - Will be choice of 3 now! Hopefully once she is here we will know which name will suit her best. I am a 70's kid and best mate was a 'sam' who I thought was so cool so think that's secretly where Samantha is coming from!

Samantha seems a little dated to me - I would also choose Serena over Selina. Although Selina probably has better nn potential.

brightyoungthing · 07/04/2010 17:08

How weird!!!! My 7yr old DD informed me yesterday she is changing her name from Francesca to Selina when she's old enough!! I think it's a lovely name and I like the short form Lina. Samantha is nice too, my best friend is one and it makes me think of confident outgoing sparkly people

DilysPrice · 07/04/2010 17:11

All good names. Samantha makes me think of Grace Kelly in High Society, which has to be a good thing.

hocuspontas · 07/04/2010 17:11

Serena best. I don't like Selina. Too much like semolina. (Which will be an obvious nickname)

Jamieandhismagictorch · 07/04/2010 17:24

I prefer Serena too ...

Samantha s second choice.

minimoos · 08/04/2010 08:15

Thanks for all your opinions. Gosh I never really thought about the baby name dilema before now. I used to think what's the big deal when friends would be pouring over baby name books for months. I'd be thinking 'jees just pick a name before I die of boredom' Now I am just beginning to realise the enormity of giving someone a name they will bestuckwith have to live with their whole life

Hocus - I never ever thought of semolina!! Now I'm having doubts. Do kids's still have to eat that at school??

Dilys - Yes I've got that song going round my head - I love that film.

Bright - Aren't children funny. Your dd's name is beautiful. Wonder if Selina is a new character in a kid's tv show. My best friend at school was just like that too and most of Samantha's I know are fun and outgoing (Everything I wanted to be but never was). I's worrying now - Am I a saddo trying to live my life through my unborn child already!!

I did think about the Sam Fox connection but tbh I can't think of it being a problem to my kid's generation (I hope). Heaven knows who their next female role model is likely to be!

Thanks again.

I like both Selina and Serena very much.

Samantha is Nicola-ish. It's too 80s to have a comeback yet.

crumpette · 08/04/2010 09:49

Serena and Selina are lovely

Samantha- way too 80s to use on a baby, imo. Every 3rd girl in my primary school was a Samantha/Sam/Sammy

LynetteScavo · 08/04/2010 09:51

Samantha.

crumpette · 08/04/2010 09:53

However, by the time baby is grown up the associations of 70s/80s naming won't be there in the same way.. I can almost imagine a Samantha having more gravitas. But I'd still pick Selina or Serena

muminthemiddle · 08/04/2010 10:24

I prefer Samantha.

Lovethesea · 08/04/2010 12:23

I like Serena better than both - or Seren.

All the Samantha's I know end up Sam and as that's such a popukar boys name too at the moment I'd think it would up the chances of loads in one class at school.
