We are having a little girl due in July and DP adores the name Rilliegh (pronounced rilley or rilee) I'm not sure, what do you all think?? Please be honest. Thanks

People will think you are thick and a chav.

You did ask for honest

Clary · 06/04/2010 18:01

I would spell it Riley.

I know a boy called Riley, no girls.

Rilleigh looks like it would be said rill-ee tbh. Is that how you are saying it? (not sure from yr OP).

piscesmoon · 06/04/2010 18:03

NO

twolittlemonkeys · 06/04/2010 18:03

Nooooo. Please don't do it. The double L definitely makes it seem like it should rhyme with willy. Use the conventional spelling if you really love the name that much.

ShadeofViolet · 06/04/2010 18:09

I like Riley for a boy, I dont like it for a girl.

And the double LL might make people say it like rilly (as in rhyming with Milly).

Doozie · 06/04/2010 18:10

NO NO NO!!! Super naff.

Is shineon taking the mick?

Please don't saddle your child with this name. She will not thank you for it.

CuppaTeaJanice · 06/04/2010 18:19

No need to attack the OP, after all it's her DP that loves the name, and she's admitted she's not sure.

Maybe she's posted a thread on here to give her ammunition to persuade him it's really not a good idea to use the name. There's only so far you can go to please your man!

Looks like we've all scared her off though...

dizzydixies · 06/04/2010 18:21

Cuppa, if we have scared her off and she's legged it, I don't blame her frankly

grumpypants · 06/04/2010 18:23

well, it has precedent as a name - rilliegh kronebusch is a snow mobiler (google v useful) so i take back my initial response - it's not a name. However, it is dreadful on first hearing. I have been persuaded out of preghead choices such as elvis; presley; mackenzie; sterling; skye etc so can totally have sympathy for how a name sounds to you as opposed to a non pregnant with your child person

DinahRod · 06/04/2010 18:25

But maybe the OP will find it useful - ppl do tend to say on here what ppl won't say to your face but are secretly thinking.

It looks it should be pn like Rhyl (as in the Welsh town) followed by Lee.

Imo however it is spelt, it's a boy's name.

Stac14, what names do you like?

Scorps · 06/04/2010 18:25

Riley/Reilly can be unisex - I have a boy Reilly.

Spidermama · 06/04/2010 18:30

Wow Mumsnetters are so ridiculously reactionary about names. If, for example, a new up and coming author came on to do a live web chat and she was called Rilleigh Jones, they wouldn't bat an eyelid.

I think it's nice. She would have to pronounce and spell it all the time (though I got the right pronounciation straight away) but that need not be a major problem. My ds has a name which usually needs to be pronounced for people. He doesn't mind and the people close to him all know it.

You people seriously lack imagination when it comes to name threads and I'm sure you can't ALL live in Surbiton.

I like the name Riley for a girl. I grew up with a girl called Riley and always thought it beautiful. I think the spelling is a bit over the top though, speaking as someone whose parents thought they'd make me unique by giving a twist on the spelling to my name. I absolutely hate giving my name as I always have to spell it out.

ShadeofViolet · 06/04/2010 18:36

Spidermama - I would think it was a man! Its a boys name.

muggglewump · 06/04/2010 18:38

Shiney, I've seen you say the names of your kids before and they are not out there in the way that Rill-ee silly willy is.

Now I named my DD Niamh, out there in that I am not Irish, and nor is anyone in my family, I've never even visited the fair old emerald isle but still less out there than this.

ShadeofViolet · 06/04/2010 18:41

Muggglewump - snap

Also Spidermama, noone is going to say to someone thier name is awful as it is already thier name. But if someone is making a choice before they take the plunge then we can only be honest.

stac14 · 06/04/2010 18:54

Thanks for the responses. It is a real name although not of that spelling. I'm not a chav or thick and definately don't want to saddle my child with a stupid name. You have given me reasons to go back to dp and refuse to call her it. My sons name is Jack so as you can see I don't usually have out there tastes. Thanks again x

stac14, I could live with Riley for a girl, i think it;s just the spelling that's putting people off mostly.

It's an unusual name for a girl anyway (not necessarily a bad thing) but the creative spelling does make it look like you just don;t know how to spell it iyswim?

i would let dp leave it on the potentials list, but only spelled sensibly! lol

coldtits · 06/04/2010 18:58

It's horrific.

DinahRod · 06/04/2010 18:59

Jack is lovely, dp clearly has pg hormones. and you should definitely choose!
