Whats so bad about Thea?

lovesaruby · 03/04/2010 13:56

Currently expecting dd no.3. Other dd's are Grace Margaret and Ava Ruby. My maiden name was Theobald so was rooting for Theodore if having a boy in honour of that side of my family but since its a girl am very much liking Thea instead. Dh has vetoed it saying its too "out there" for us! Is it really too different to use with Grace and Ava? Am waiting for him to get home from work to inform him my cousin has just named his daughter Roccoco Rose and thats clearly more "out there" than Thea!!!

I like Thea - nothing "out there" about it imo (unlike Roccoco!)
Goes well with Grace and Ava too.

Lovethesea · 03/04/2010 14:07

Thea seems nice and easily as 'normal' as Grace and Ava these days.

Roccoco .... I had to work hard just to get the right number of c's in it!

I love the idea - i.e. of using your maiden name (would love to incorporate my own if we have another boy). But... Thea, to me, is not so much old lady, as matronly (which is worse IMO).

Ava and Grace are such lovely names - feminine, classic names without being overly pretty and frilly (plus great associations - Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly). Thea is, well, not so much...! I think if I was a Thea with sisters called Ava and Grace, I'd be more than a little miffed.

What about using it as a middle name?

franke · 03/04/2010 14:09

Nowt wrong with Thea - it's a lovely name.

DebiNewberry · 03/04/2010 14:10

It's not out there at all. And I think it's very pretty - not matronly at all, I know a gorgeous little thea.

plonker · 03/04/2010 14:11

Thea is beautiful ...and not 'out there' at all!

The only time I would say not to Thea is if you have a 'Th...' surname as it would sound as though you had a lisp

nannynobnobs · 03/04/2010 14:12

I love it too. It goes well with your others

Takver · 03/04/2010 14:13

Not in the least bit 'out there' . . . lovely name IMO, and sits nicely in the middle between 'very unusual - no-one will know how to spell it' and 'very popular - 15 of them in the class at school'. I would have said if anything that it is more well known than Ava.
I would probably give either Theodora or Dorothea as a full name though.

MrsCadwallader · 03/04/2010 14:17

I've give Alethea as a full name myself, but Dorothea is nice too

lovesaruby · 03/04/2010 14:18

We did actually name the first two with Grace Kelly and Ava Gardener in mind but having searched for another classic hollywood starlet, Im coming up short. I have to pick a short name too - our surname is very long and very unusual!

Audrey (Hepburn)?

BessieBoots · 03/04/2010 14:21

She's not a film star, but Thea Gilmore is very talented, very pretty and very, very cool...

(Love your DDs names, by the way)

plonker · 03/04/2010 14:38

How about Mia (Farrow)?

Short, elegant and very pretty

lovesaruby · 03/04/2010 14:44

Plonker - Mia is lovely and one I shortlisted for dd1, sadly dh didnt like it and since then every other child around here is Mia or Maya, dd2 has 4 at her nursery!

OP posts:
plonker · 03/04/2010 14:49

Ah thats a shame. I have a beautiful Mia

Goingspare · 03/04/2010 14:51

I like Thea very much, and I don't do 'out there'.

Bonsoir · 03/04/2010 14:56

Thea is very unsexy.

DebiNewberry · 03/04/2010 14:57

Lana (Turner), Mae (West), Vivien (Leigh), Lauren (Bacall) Sophia (Loren)?

lovesaruby · 03/04/2010 15:04

Have toyed with Vivien DebiNewberry but not sure it goes with our surname. I have two Laurens in the family already and dd2's best friend is Sophia! Im finding it hard to pick something that someone we know hasnt already nabbed!

DebiNewberry · 03/04/2010 15:10

I really like Harlow too, but might really be a bit 'out there'!

Clara, after Clara Bow? Will stop now!

Goingspare · 03/04/2010 15:13

Didn't another actress make some comment about the silent 't' in Jean Harlow?

Proceed with care.

lovesaruby · 03/04/2010 15:24

Harlow is definately too 'out there'! We live in Essex, a definate no-no

cece · 03/04/2010 15:33

No mpore out there than Ava imo. We were going to use Thea for DC2 but he was a boy. I think it is lovely.

Alternatively you could go for

Althea
Alathea

which we also considered.

cece · 03/04/2010 15:34

BTW Thea is very sexy; it means goddess

CrankyTwanky · 03/04/2010 15:44

It is lovely, and not at all "out there".
I "do" out there, and it's too tame for me!
