Sabrina?

We had kinda settled on Sabrina as the fave name for a girl. Now DH says he's worried people will think it's a 'silly name'

I was originally worried the witch had ruined it forever but it was DH that assured me that soon no one will remember her...

I liked the fact that it is a literary name like mine.

What do you guys think?

cheers

I like it too - Milton, isn't it?

I know one, and a Sabine

When I was a little girl living in Algeria, we had a baby called Sabrina next door to us. Its an Arabic name. Makes me think of tinkly bracelets and the smell of cloves. I appreciate that this name association may be unique to me, but it is a nice one nonetheless!

The teenage witch business is almost history already, I'd say.

BallpointPen · 01/04/2010 11:25

Erm, I remembered her instantly but it's still a nice name. Good nn potential too- Sabby, rina....

AllieW · 01/04/2010 11:28

I'm afraid I did instantly think of the teenage witch. However, in truth, I've never been overly fond of the name. Sorry.

Looks like it has lots of roots! I admit thought it was welsh though too.

Arg, thought we were sorted - perhaps it's just now it's getting closer we're starting to panic! Can anyone suggest anything similar?

Criteria (not asking too much at all) are:
literary, unusual but pronounceable, not chavvy, has nice nn's...

surname begins with D and is very boring.

gemcgem · 01/04/2010 13:51

i also think off the teenage witch , but hay iv got a harvey !! lol! ( an he's older then the common jordans)

BendyBob · 01/04/2010 13:55

Pretty name...wasn't it a film with Audrey Hepburn? That was my first thought

Bumperlicious · 01/04/2010 13:57

I think it is lovely

Bucharest · 01/04/2010 15:01

Wasn't the Italian singer that flashed her boobs on a pop vid in the 80s Sabrina?
Along with an original Charlie's Angel.

I'm afraid I just get a sort of airheady vacuous over-made up Cheryl Cole type person when I think of it.

A fair few of dd's schoolfriends' mums are called Sabrina. Might be an Italian version of Karen/Linda etc (ie popular about 35 yrs ago)

I like Selina a lot though.

CarmelitaMiggs · 01/04/2010 15:13

It reminds me of E Nesbit's Wet Magic (about mermaids), which was where I first came across the Milton

Sabrina fair,
Listen where thou art sitting
Under the glassy, cool, translucent wave,
In twisted braids of lilies knitting
The loose train of thy amber-dropping hair;
Listen for dear honour's sake,
Goddess of the silver lake,
Listen and save.

LadyCressida · 01/04/2010 15:26

I have never heard of a singer. I like the film though with Audrey Hepburn and the remake with Julia Ormund where they do quote the milton poem.

There is a good chance this baby could have 'amber dropping hair' and be ginger though!

Sabrina the witch - yeah, one day no-one will remember that - but that day is a long, long way off....

crumpette · 02/04/2010 13:46

Sabina is an Arabic name. Not sure about Sabrina. I like it but very teenage witch (I know one actually, she's lovely)

jabberwocky · 02/04/2010 13:51

I like it. As someone mentioned I think it was also a film with Audrey Hepburn and then a remake with....can't remember but lovely actress and also Harrison Ford.

malovitt · 02/04/2010 13:57

My parents briefly considered the name Sabrina for me in the 60s - unfortunately the name was then linked to this model (considered quite racy then!) so they changed their minds.

LadyCressida · 02/04/2010 17:36

Lol she does look like a bit of a bimbo!

Well thanks guys, not sure we're much closer to knowing if it's 'the' name yet -opinions seem to be very divided!- but definitely still in the picture!

Lovely name, not a bit silly (where do all these DHs get their notions???). I also love Serena.

mathanxiety · 02/04/2010 17:59

And Sabine.
