What do you think of Deirdre as a girl's name?

The meaning is sad. Sorrowful. But would you let the meaning stop you using the name you love?

Have namechanged just to let you know I grew up with this name and hated every minute of it! In my early twenties I adopted a nickname so only my family call me Deidre now. (Dear-dree) It was always rhymed with weirdy or dreary at school and I was aware it meant 'woeful' and in a way I lived up to it For a while I was called Diddy which was ok but it wasn't until Deirdre Barlow came along that everyone recognised it as a proper name and I didn't have to spell it out all the time.

What I'm trying to say is DON'T!!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

Unexpected, serious, and yet with a cutesy twist.

mathanxiety · 02/04/2010 17:55

Yep, it's DEER-dra. I know a teenage one and grew up with several.

I think of the Monty Python marriage guidance skit, though I like the name.

BuzzingNoise · 02/04/2010 17:56

It's lovely. Classy.

NO, HANG ON, IT'S NOT! IT IS AWFUL.

gibbberish · 02/04/2010 18:06

No. Please don't.

KAEKAE · 02/04/2010 18:36

I am sorry I don't like it, of course it does remind me of Deidre from corrie, veiny neck, bad glasses and a smokers voice, but that wouldn't put me off if I liked the name.

chipmonkey · 02/04/2010 18:56

Oy, less of the "old lady!"
I'm 41 and it was very popular amongst my peers growing up in Ireland. I love it!

Magaly · 02/04/2010 20:49
