The one I know has an Italian dad. I didn't know this when I met her though, I didn't think it sounded foreign. I kept forgetting it at first, but I guess that's something that does tend to happen with unusual names.

Ponders · 31/03/2010 20:38

oh, oh, you were thinking ill-ARIA, weren't you? (Going by your potential nicknames?)

Even less likely to be the first guess of the general public, IMHO

boodleboot · 31/03/2010 20:41

ih...laa...ria

wos how i was hearing it...

StuffedFullOfNothing · 31/03/2010 20:46

What about just Aria?

Ponders · 31/03/2010 20:55

eel-AH-ria???

(It is so hard to write names phonetically!)

boodleboot · 31/03/2010 20:59

I like it - it was on our initial list with Eliana and Elysia.

Now we DH has decided he doesn't think they are 'right' for our baby so wants something more classic.

hippipotamiHasLost80lbs · 31/03/2010 21:01

Uhm, not sure - my first thought was 'hilarious' (sorry)

Aria on the other hand is lovely (but I know a gorgeous little Aria so may be a bit biased)

Ponders · 31/03/2010 21:02

oh, ok

ill-aria is v pretty, but will be mis-pronounced all her life. Will you mind?

boodleboot · 31/03/2010 21:12

well my name gets mispronounced all the time but it hasnt really bothered me...the important people will ony mispronounce it and be corrected the once and the repeat offenders...well fuck'em i say haaa. x

MadameCastafiore · 31/03/2010 21:14

How do you spell that?

How do you pronounce/say that?

Be prepared for that lots and lots - mine is a Harriet and we get it often enough.

Not keen either TBH.

ChippingIn · 01/04/2010 07:05

No sorry...

(whispers... sounds contagious )

5DollarShake · 01/04/2010 08:21

If she was from Florence, I'd think - fabulous, beautifully musical. If she was from Watford on the other hand...

It doesn't do it for me, but if you like it, go for it.

I have heard of a baby Ilanna, if you like slightly out of the ordinary 'I' names...

AllieW · 01/04/2010 11:44

I think it's rather nice. I hadn't heard of it before. Why do people always seem to presume that if THEY personally haven't heard of it, it must be made up?

Lonnie · 01/04/2010 12:29

pretty

PuppyMonkey · 01/04/2010 12:33

I read is as Ilana at first. Ilana is quite nice.

Magaly · 01/04/2010 16:55

AllieW I don't presume that, I just like to know what I've just heard; without having to say what?

Is your sur name Italian OP? I think that would give people a clue as to how to pronounce it.

boodleboot · 01/04/2010 17:55

ha...nope...it is irish! x

OP posts:
Magaly · 01/04/2010 18:14

are you a see-oban or a sin-eed?!

janeite · 01/04/2010 18:18

I don't like it, sorry.

boodleboot · 01/04/2010 18:56

No its my married surname that is irish which is ridiculous really as DH isn't irish at all neither was his parents....he is actually mixed race, indian-english. His daughter, my SD, is 1/4 indian and 3/4 english and actually looks very italian so i think our bubs, should she be a girl could look exotic enough to carry of Ilaria....
