My maiden name as 1st name for son?

thoughts? Whole name would be Bedford Brooker, I thought maybe we could call him Buddy for short. We would give him a more conventional middle name in case he wanted one when he grew up.

I thought maybe this would be a nice way of hanging onto my maiden name without giving son/future children excess names!

?????

I'm sorry. I really want to like it because it's a great idea, but Bedford just makes me think of a van or a quite boring place.

Prinpo · 30/03/2010 16:35

Sorry, but not my cup of tea. Bedford van, etc.. Also, it sounds like a bit of an Americanism (which you may not mind) to give him a first name which sounds so much like a surname.

Buddy is a cute nn, though!

Ellpeas · 30/03/2010 16:35

'Bedford Booker' sounds slightly like a firm of solicitors...I appreciate the concept, just think 'Bedford' doesnt really work as a first name

PandaEis · 30/03/2010 16:39

i like it! it sounds like a lawyer or high flying journalist name

i wanted to do this as my maiden name is quiet a nice conventional name (Lewis) but my cousin got there first anmd called his first DC lewis ahh well, not the same meaning for him as hes from my mums side of the family so different maiden name IYSWIM might use it for the middle name of our Ds if we ever have one though

SqueezyB · 30/03/2010 16:40

I know 2 people who did this, but the names were Thomas and Lewis so it worked - I'm not sure Bedford does, sorry! Maybe as a middle name?

sallyseton · 30/03/2010 16:40

What about Brooker Bedford?

It's your surname.

I don't like surnames as names, although when I clicked on this I thought it was going to be Heckinbottom or something.

It does sound like a swish lawyer from a Tv series.

Prinpo · 30/03/2010 16:45

LOL at Heckinbottom! I needed that. It's deffo going onto my shortlist.

yellowflowers · 30/03/2010 16:46

Not a nice thought but if you ever split up and reverted to your maiden name you'd have the same surname as your son's first name.

Reminds me a bit of Brady Hobbs, Miranda's son in Sex and the City. She then marries the dad, Steve Brady. So it's baby Brady Hobbs and his dad Steve Brady.

It's you son and your name but you wanted opinion so..
It just reminds me of Bedford van. Also if I saw his name I'd probably assume he was American. It does also sound like an estate agency.

Buddy is ok as a nn but I, too, prefer Ford.

Please take all this with a POS. If you go with it, when he's here nobody will give a shit because he will always have been Bedford.

Bigmouthstrikesagain · 30/03/2010 16:58

I wouldn't use that name as we live near Bedford - but not against it per se - was tempted to use my maiden name Campbell for ds.

Fimbow · 30/03/2010 17:00

No

But I do love Campbell, dh wouldn't entertain I though for DS. I also know a Crawford which was his mother's maiden name.

PollyTechnique · 30/03/2010 17:04

IMO it would sound better to have a forename then Bedford Brooker, for e.g.

Adam Bedford Brooker
Charlie Bedford Brooker
etc

MathsMadMummy · 30/03/2010 17:13

middle name may be better, IMHO.

we used DH's nan's maiden name, Reeve, as one of my DS' middle names.

5DollarShake · 30/03/2010 17:17

I say go for it. Bedford is perhaps a little unusual as a first name, but he will grow into it and make it his own in no time.

My brother has my Mum's maiden name as his first name, although she had to really be talked into it by my Dad. Her surname is actually much more common as a first name, though. The result is an almost comedically Scottish first and surname. He wears it well. For a Kiwi.

pippylongstockings · 30/03/2010 17:23

I like it as an idea and Bedford is a good strong name.

I know someone who is called Bainbridge as his first name - he carry's it well.

brogan2 · 30/03/2010 17:27

5dollarshake, I know a guy from NZ called Douglas Mackenzie. He's not your brother is he?

littledawley · 30/03/2010 17:30

It would be a lovely middle name IMO. I love the idea of it - DD goes to school with an Elliot and that's his Mum's maiden name which I think is lovely.

Eglu · 30/03/2010 17:34

I like it. DS2 has my maiden name as his middle name. I wanted it for a first name but DH was not so keen.

I'm sorry, but I really dislike it.

5DollarShake · 30/03/2010 17:47

Brogan - no, my brother's name is even more Scottish than that.
