What do you think of Shosanna as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

The name is Shoshana, not Shosanna. It's Hebrew, not Greek -- it features in the Song of Songs ("HaRo'eh baShoshanim")

Don't like it. There are many much nicer Hebrew names.

skihorse · 03/04/2010 04:36

mat Nothing wrong with Jewish, but it'd be a bit like me giving my child a name normally reserved for example a Malaysian islander, totally feckin' poncey!

mathanxiety · 03/04/2010 17:54

Is 'Jewish' that foreign though?

BitOfFun · 03/04/2010 17:57

Sounds like a tongue-twister to me.

However, if I'd been called Shoshana, I would definitely have got away with The Pouffe Incident with no worries

CrankyTwanky · 03/04/2010 18:05

Shurely shome mishtake?

frakkinnuts · 03/04/2010 18:33

I really like it but do see it as a very Jewish/Hebrew/Israeli name. And I am none of the above. It's a name that will probably lead to stereotypes.

skihorse · 04/04/2010 03:57

mat No, of course not. But as a Jewish woman myself tbh I don't like it when the names are picked up and used willy-nilly.

mathanxiety · 05/04/2010 17:25

I see the same thing happening with Irish names, Skihorse. But there are a lot of names that are traditionally Hebrew that are used (although probably not in their original form) by non-Jewish parents -- thinking of both OT and NT names that are very common.

Magaly · 05/04/2010 19:07

I know it's a proper Jewish name, but it sounds like a drunk saying Susannah.

Susannah is nice though.

WitchyWooWoo · 07/04/2010 12:18

means lily. it sounds a lot better as susannah if you're not jewish, a bit pretentious as other posters have pointed out.

Rockbird · 08/04/2010 09:04

I really like it but do think you need to be in some way Jewish to use it as it does stand out.

And please stop with the Sean Connery thing. All I can think of are pooey pouffes!

minimoos · 08/04/2010 09:09

No I really don't like this. What a mouthful. Susannah sounds much better imo.

rimmer08 · 08/04/2010 11:18

its a name from the film inglorious basterds

StepSideways · 08/04/2010 11:47

it does sound like the drunken version of a real name..
