So after 2 hours of baby naming for #2 at the weekend we like Aria and Kyla as our top 2 girls names...but both have been really slated on here in the past...

Our top boys choice is Byron

We are looking for a short name that has no nickname, that isn't popular at all in fact the rarer the better...

Honest thoughts and ideas please.. I'd rather hear now than to my face in the Autumn

Have never got the attraction of the surname Byron as a first name given the incestuous associations. It will also be shortened to By which is isn't great either.

Although Aria is just twee, I do like Kyla, and would choose that name above any that you have listed. However, many "K" names have had a bum rap recently and wonder if it will be lumped in with the rest? Alternatively you could choose a name with the same starting sound, how about Celeste, Callista, Calla (as in the lily), Clea?

Truly unusual names for a girl are probably what you would see as far too traditional, Jeanne, Mary etc, however, what about Blythe, as in blythe spirit?

Love Byron. Do't like either of the girls' names. Just my personal view. Perhaps consider other girls names with the -a ending?

The incestous associations of Byron are not actually that well known, and are far behind its associations with the poet (or Byron Kelleher for that matter).

I LOVE Byron. I think it sounds quite distinguished. (It belongs in the same space in my head as Vaughan/Vaughn - a favourite name which I'm not allowed to use )

Aria is quite pretty, but I'd feel sorry for her if she were tone deaf.

Kyla is quite sweet. Mercifully Kylie isn't quite as amazingly popular as she was when we were kids so people won't think it's a version of that. (It's Scottish, isn't it??). I knew a lovely Kyla, so perhaps that has swayed me a little.

You can't pick a very rare name that people won't tend to slate, OP. The two characteristics are mutually exclusive. If it's very uncommon, that's because there are lots of people who don't like it.

Would you consider Kyle for a boy and Brynne for a girl?

I really don't like Byron -- seems like Homer, Earl, Cyrus; very middle aged American man type name.

And I love Vaughn too. Even for a girl.

My mum surprised me and suggested Leaf this evening! Very out there for her!

Vaughn is nice and unusual but sadly doesn't go with our surname.

I don't like any of them but having seen your name choices, I think we have very different likes! You have to choose what you like not what I or others may think.

I know how it got started too. Ken and Sandra thought it would be 'cute' to name their sprog after both of them, then for reasons I can't figure out, someone else thought it was a fab idea.

What about "Io" for a girl -it's a moon of Jupiter. Pronounced Eye - o. Or is it too Old Macdonald?!
