Do you like either of these names for a little boy, esp considering the last name is Lannigan?

How would you tend to pronouce each? My thought is LAFE for the first.

A few more randoms:
Dane
Birch
Blake
Evan

I really like Leif - though I would pronounce it like Leaf, I think it goes ok with the surname.

Loren is too much like Lauren.

The others i'm not keen on;
Dane - just reminds me of Dane Bowers and that's not cool.
Birch - Corporal punishment link not nice.
Blake - Very American soap opera so a bit naff.
Evan - This ok, not my style but second nicest after Leif

mathanxiety · 26/03/2010 17:34

I think Leif is more Leaf than Lafe. A problem I think a boy named Loren might encounter is the similarity to Lauren, which is very much a girl's name. I like Leif, but I think it might make your surname sound like Flanagan (Leif Lannigan = Lee Flanagan).

(I liked the names on your other thread a lot more, tbh -- none of your other suggestions here have the same appeal as the others, imo)

Thanks for the input.
Math- I am pleased to see someone is willing to go down the 'different' path with me. I always think of names in terms of sounds. I'd rather have a different name that feels right than a traditional name purely to avoid being different. That being said, I can sense when a name is trying too hard as well.

Kahlil, Senne, Rajko are still on the list!

Good!! I like your philosophy too.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/03/2010 18:28

Vermont - one of my sons is Evan, so obv. I love it

I don't like any of the others, sorry

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/03/2010 18:29

A friend of mine has a Layth - Arabic I think

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/03/2010 18:30

I also love Lorcan (Irish name)

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/03/2010 18:32

Oh, and an absolute fave of mine (wanted to use for my boys but vetoed by DH) Asa

othersideofchannel · 26/03/2010 20:44

Asa is a girls' name in Scandinavia.

FiveOrangePips · 26/03/2010 20:47

Leif is pronounced life in Norse sagas (afaik), but I know a Leif, pronounced leaf.

Cosette · 26/03/2010 20:55

I know a Leif pronounced 'Layf', but it can be pronounced 'Leaf' or 'Life' as well - so you could go for whichever you prefer and not be wrong.

VermontMama · 26/03/2010 21:17

I knew an Asa and he was very WEIRD!! Bad association!

I did read up on the pronunction of Leif and all of the differences. I don't know which I like best - layf or leaf.

Lorcan is interesting... but I prefer the close sound of Lachlan. Lorcan reminds me of someone with antennae

Lachlan is good too, I prefer the leef pronunciation to layf, not sure about life though.

cory · 26/03/2010 22:21

Leif is pronounced Layf in Swedish, and as far as I can work out, that's how it would have been pronounced in Old Norse too.

mathanxiety · 26/03/2010 22:27

Can I vote for Rajko again?

VermontMama · 27/03/2010 02:21

Math you can. I love it too

I realized why I had the antennae visual with the name Lorcan... reminds me of the old TV show Mork and Mindy... Lorcan/Mork and...

... shame about Asa

MarianneD · 27/03/2010 13:33

I think Leif pronounced Leaf. Also think Loren too much like Lauren. What about Lawrence?
