Hero for a girl?

Thinking of naming my upcoming DD Hero, but am worried she will resent having an unusual name.

I love it- it's Greek but I first became aware of it through reading Shakespeare's much ado about nothing.

I also like the feminist implications of naming her Hero- like she could achieve anything.

I also love the name Ophelia (Hamlet) as I think it is very pretty but don't like naming her after a character that goes mad and drowns herself.

What do you think of Hero (or Ophelia?)?? Help would be muchly appreciated- friends and family too polite to be of much proper help!

Hero is the name of the heroine in one of the loveliest books ever (IMHO); "Friday's Child" by Georgette Heyer; consequently I tried to sneak it onto my shortlist for DD, but DP was having none of it...

"Peasant taunters"

Yes, there is something in that. I got all sorts of teasings (good natured) about my name growing up, and to this day am yet to meet another one. I like that about it.

However, now you can't move for Isobels, and variations on the theme...

It is a brand of dog food, sorry too OTT for me, wouldn't call girl or boy that. Mayb Hiro, think japanese stylee but not Hero as in 'holding out for a...'. Although could get away with better if giving DD more than one name and they can then choose more 'ordinary ' middle name if don't like it as they get older, or if u backtrack & decide its too much

Longtalljosie · 26/03/2010 10:37

Hero from Much Ado was a wuss. Call her Beatrice instead

shareastory · 26/03/2010 12:58

lovely name and one I wish I had used, went for eliza instead. She wouldn't struggle because you would give her the confidence to be proud of her name. also love shakesspearean names, grandson is cassius

CJCregg · 26/03/2010 13:09

It's a wonderful name. I am another one who would have had it but was vetoed by DH. (ExDH).

It's classical and Shakespearean, how brilliant is that? And, as somebody else said, she'll grow into it. Giving her a name like Hero tells her that you believe she can be dynamic and different, original and interesting. It's got nothing to do with dog food or songs, it's a bloody classy name. And it's easy to spell!

For God's sake, when I think of how many naff names there are out there - and appalling mispellings because parents are too ignorant or bloody-minded to do the thing properly - it makes my blood boil that you are being put off a genuinely fascinating, original classic name because people 'think it sounds like a boy's name'.

Sorry - it appears I feel quite strongly about this!

I have a dd Hero, she's at school, never had anyone say anything negative (to our faces!) child or adult. I still love it.
It is a 'big' name; we didn't finally decide till she was a few weeks old, she can carry it. And she's pretty girly, super popular, and she likes her name.

AbFabT · 26/03/2010 14:45

Absolutely love it - it's on my list as a potential mn but for a boy, but I do love it for a girl too.

And I LOVE that Holding Out For A Hero song - it's what's played on our wedding video during the scenes of me getting ready!

jasper · 26/03/2010 18:01

It's a dog food

LucyM6 · 26/03/2010 18:05

Sorry I really don't like it. It's an aspiration, more than what I think of as a name.

It's also quite an ugly word imo.

LucyM6 · 26/03/2010 18:07

Plus when I hear it I think 'aspirational looney parents'

Sorry

Like calling a child 'genius' or 'diamond'

they are rarely going fully to meet the criteria iyswim

pointydog · 26/03/2010 18:07

don't like it at all at all

Bumperlicious · 26/03/2010 18:34

Prefer Hera

2old4thislark · 26/03/2010 19:27

and a chocolate.

MarianneD · 27/03/2010 13:38

Ophelia yes, Hero no

NomDePlume · 27/03/2010 14:52

Hero is a fantastic name. I love it but would have to make sure you moved in the right circles IYSWIM (it is v public school, imo). I love it though. My DH would also veto it (even though he is a public school boy)

Shaz10 · 27/03/2010 14:56

I quite like Hero. But will it pass the playground test? Imagine yourself shouting it across the playground. Feel ok? Go for it. Feel like an idiot? Pick something else.

Granny23 · 27/03/2010 15:10

I also think that Hero is a very masculine name. My poor FIL was saddled with Hector and he was the mildest mannered, non warlike, small, warm hearted man. His name was just so unsuitable it was laughable. No help that it was always shortened to Hec.

ChynaDoll2006 · 27/03/2010 15:37

Met a hero who hated her name. she was about 10. i quite like it but wouldnt use it
