What do you think of August or Augustin for a boy.
Would most people find it strange?

Love Augustus with Gus as nn. Don't like August or Augustin as stand alone names. Think people would find it a strange choice, but it's your choice.

I like Augusta for a girl too - nn: Gussie

Careful with Augustus - Augustus Gloop was the greedy little boy in Willy Wonka

August/Augustin are quite nice

I prefer Augustus if pronounced in English or German or Augustin if pronounced in French.

hatebeak · 23/03/2010 22:11

I like August - lighter to wear than Augustus/in. I was eying it up if DD2 had been a boy - was slightly worried that some people might think it was bit of a cosmic hippie name, like Rain or something.(This might be a plus point, I guess, depending on your taste.) Or wonder why he was called August if born in March...But it's lovely.

dizzydixies · 23/03/2010 22:37

another fan of Augustus here - not to sure about August, a bit too try hard to be different imo

incandescent · 23/03/2010 23:18

Augustino is lovely, but you probably need Italian roots to get away with it.

I was pursued by an Augustino once

tryingtoleave · 24/03/2010 02:50

Makes me (and probably only me) think of August Strindberg.

pogleswife · 24/03/2010 07:18

Ds2 went to school in NZ with an adorable little boy called August . The name really grew on me.

umf · 24/03/2010 09:16

I love August. Works in Swedish too so we've considered it. Augustin also nice but poss more pretentious-sounding?

boodleboot · 24/03/2010 09:20

August is fab. I love Augustine as was my fav theologian i studied at uni....would obv use Gus as a more managable everyday name tho....

PortBlacksandDweller · 24/03/2010 09:32

I like August very much. Would you pronounce it like the month or AwGUST iyswim...?

susssiq · 24/03/2010 09:39

sleepyhead3 · 24/03/2010 13:11

If you like names in a similar vein, what about

Marcus
Christian
Cassius
Rufus

notsoteenagemum · 24/03/2010 15:17

Augustus Gloop, Augustus Gloop,
The great big greedy nincompoop.

Not keen at all sorry.

mathanxiety · 24/03/2010 15:39

Like August a lot. I've met two in the last little while, so I'm not the only one who likes it. I would avoid Augustus, but I like Augustine.

sleepyhead3 · 24/03/2010 19:11

Jamie- thx for suggestions- was just trying to get a shortlist together and a couple of those are on it!

Is it to be pronounced as in the month or as in "an august aristocrat"? (I've never heard the name said, so I genuinely don't know). I think I prefer Augustus on the whole, but not really overly keen on either. Sorry.

ShadeofViolet · 24/03/2010 19:18

Not my cup of tea - will he be born in August?
