Ronan or Ruan

We need to choose a name for what we are almost sure will be a little boy, due in August. We already have a daughter called Niamh and have irish/cornish connections. Is the name Ronan too associated with Mr Keating? I'm thinking that over time our friends/family would only think of our Ronan when they hear the name. We like Ruan too. He was an irish man who became a cornish saint, so fits with our heritage well. What do people think?

I like Ruan, never heard of it, different without being wanky iyswim.

Ronan, no.

Italiangreyhound · 22/03/2010 00:46

Both are nice. I would not think of Mr Keating automatically.

Ondine · 22/03/2010 07:35

I think Ronan has a nicer sound, Ruan is harsher and could sound a bit like ruin.

I wouldn't let the Keating connection stop you going for Ronan, like you say, friends and family will soon associatate it with your son not Mr Keating.

Prefer Ronan.

Ruan.

randomimposter · 22/03/2010 08:58

Ruan by a whisker. But both lovely.
And lovely with Neeeeeve

I really like Ronan and would love to have it on our short-list for this baby (don't know if we're having a girl or a boy), but (Irish) DH has vetoed...

I wouldn't associate it with Mr Keating, but perhaps he does and that's why.

Definitely prefer it to Ruan (which is nice, though).

Prefer Ronan

dizzydixies · 22/03/2010 11:13

I actually prefer Roan which is a mix of the two, sorry!!

we had that chosed for DD2 had she come out blue

of your two though I would choose Ruan

DinahRod · 22/03/2010 11:14

Ruan

mathanxiety · 22/03/2010 17:06

Both lovely, don't know what I'd pick. I wouldn't let the Keating link put you off Ronan unless your surname is Keating.

Ronan seems the normal choice to me, but I'm Irish. Ronan is a bit dated to me though. A little bit like calling a baby Paul. Nothing wrong with that, but even in Ireland, I'd think Ronan? Rowan goes with Niamh well.

Ruan sounds like ruin. There is a sur name Ruane.

lovechoc · 22/03/2010 19:04

Ronan

allyfe · 23/03/2010 12:09

Must admit, I would let Mr Keating put you off Ronan. I really like Ruan though. I've never heard it before but it has a nice sound.

CaptainPicardsPineapple · 23/03/2010 16:54

Ruan. I immediately thought of Ronan Keating when I read it.

kaycat · 23/03/2010 20:08

Thanks everyone. I think I'm leaning more towards Ruan. The gaelic spelling is Ruadhan...is this too much??

I would have preferred Ruadhan but now I know one...would have to say Ronan. I think people will miss pronounce the irish version but I prefer it. In irish it would be kept for red haired children. Rua - means red. How about Rian? or Odhran (Oran)?
