Help - my taste in names is pants!

Ok I've started two threads re names so far, and seems like I'm a bit rubbish!! I tend to like the nickname rather than the original and traditional name...
So rather than start a new thread for each name, here is my shortlist(ish):

Nelly/Nellie
Maisie
Milly
Maddison
Ava
Evie
Gracie
Darcy
Willow
Bracken
Autumn
Ada
Marcy
Isabella (But would be called Bella)

So straw poll? Second name will be May - not because it's 'in' but it's a family name...

OP posts:

Ps apart from Bracken there's nothing really pants on your list. Pants is Apricot !

MamaLazarou · 20/03/2010 17:07

May is a much nicer first name than all the names on your list, IMO.

Ineedsomesleep · 20/03/2010 17:20

Nelly/Nellie - the elephant, or as they say locally "you're a right Nelly".
Maisie - no
Milly - Silly Milly. Try Matilda.
Maddison - prefer traditional names myself.
Ava - way too popular.
Evie - was at a small baby group on Friday and there were 4 Evies, and I know tonnes more.
Gracie - again, way too popular.
Darcy - no
Willow - fine for a dog.
Bracken - see willow.
Autumn - no.
Ada - my Gran's name, but I still don't like it.
Marcy - no
Isabella (But would be called Bella) - again, very, very popular.

mathanxiety · 20/03/2010 18:09

Nelly/Nellie -- LOVE, (as nn for Eleanor?)
Maisie -- dislike
Milly -- dislike, too popular and also very frilly
Maddison -- HATE with a passion
Ava -- LOVE
Evie -- like, but very, very popular
Gracie -- like, but very popular
Darcy -- Can't get past the 'arse' sound in the middle
Willow -- Like a lot
Bracken -- NO, please don't even consider this
Autumn -- ok
Ada -- Like
Marcy -- dislike, sounds like New Jersey in the days of disco to me
Isabella (But would be called Bella) -- way too popular

sungirltan · 20/03/2010 18:15

i like ada may

fgs don't go with isabella. there are hundreds of them at the moment. i think bella on its own is better

DrivenToDistraction · 20/03/2010 18:20

grovebuster Glad you like Elsa May! Notice how no one has said anything bad about it yet.

But, seriously, it's lovely! Use it

janeiteisFedUp · 20/03/2010 18:23

Nelly/Nellie -nope
Maisie - ok
Milly - ok
Maddison - awful, sorry, but I like Madelaine (but can't spell it)
Ava - ok
Evie - ok but Eve nicer
Gracie - no
Darcy - I quite like this but lots of people on here don't. I, however, like the Austen link.
Willow -it's ok but I wouldn't choose it personally
Bracken - hideous
Autumn - awful
Ada - nice enough but Ava better
Marcy - awful
Isabella (But would be called Bella)-lovely but agree that nn can't really be dictated in advance. EVERYBODY calls my dd Izzy, even though I don't like it.

mathanxiety · 20/03/2010 18:24

I love Elsa too. I think it's much nicer than the very popular Elsie.

telsa · 20/03/2010 19:14

Ada May sounds good to me.

allyfe · 20/03/2010 19:31

Nelly/Nellie - Don't like it
Maisie - like it. Know an adult one who because she is an adult, it's fine. But very little girl sounding otherwise!
Milly - Too little girly
Maddison - yuck
Ava - love it
Evie - Eve yes, evie, no.
Gracie - hate it
Darcy - okay
Willow - actually quite like it!
Bracken = No - prefer Sorrel or Laurel
Autumn - hate it
Ada - like it
Marcy - too American for me
Isabella (But would be called Bella) - Sorry but I hate Bella.

Not much help I'm afraid! But partly because I don't like nicknames much, I prefer real names so we're just coming from a different name place

brimfull · 20/03/2010 19:33

yup your taste is pants

Hulababy · 20/03/2010 19:35

Nelly/Nellie May - I prefer Nell with Nellie as nn
Maisie May - think it is too much of a mouthful with all the Ms
Milly May - see above
Maddison May - I don't like Maddison
Ava May - prefer Eva
Evie May - like this
Gracie May - prefer Grace
Darcy May - ok
Willow May - I quite like Willow but not sure I could use it
Bracken May - don't like Bracken
Autumn May - don't like Autumn
Ada May - not keen on Ada
Marcy May - too many Ms
Isabella May (But would be called Bella) - quite nice

AbFabT · 20/03/2010 23:47

Blythe is by far my favourite.

Biscuitbreaker · 20/03/2010 23:50

Ada! I love that, and haven't heard it around... Ada May...
sounds lovely.

My DD is Ava May, May is also a family name for us, so obviously love that! I really love Gracie and Isabella too, don't know many of them.

diddl · 21/03/2010 09:21

From your list Isabella.
Also like Elsa, Harriet, Eleanor & Cecily.

Wanderingsheep · 21/03/2010 09:33

I love Isabella! I don't associate it with the Twilight books/film, although yes some people might.

Lovecat · 21/03/2010 10:00

Isn't Aubrey a boy's name?

Ada May makes me think of an aged charlady, sorry, but it does. Ada was my granny's name but we didn't consider it for a moment as it's so godawful.

Willow May sounds lovely but be prepared for her being called Willy at school.

I love Isabella, Elsa and the suggestion of Ava. If you want Gracie, would call your DD Grace as then at least she's got the choice (and doesn't sound like she should have clogs and a shawl singing 'Salleee, Salleee!')

About the contemporary connotations of a name - my 9 yr old nephew is called Louie, (spelt that way so people know he's not a Lou-is), and the amount of stick the poor child takes because of Louie Walsh is unbelieveable... but in another 10 years time I doubt anyone will give a toss. (the fact his name reminds me of a mafia gang member is neither here nor there, of course!)

janmumto5 · 21/03/2010 10:06

Ava May is lovely my dd is Kayleigh-May as her first name then Rose as middle name..

Kayleigh-May Rose x

Smerch · 21/03/2010 10:54

Nothing wrong with your taste in names, just because they don't suit others' tastes doesn't mean they're bad names. For what it's worth, here's my opinion

Nelly/Nellie - agree with the elephant link unfortunately, doesn't stop me loving Nell though
Maisie - I like it but not sure it fits with May
Milly - same as Maisy
Maddison - not my favourite. Like Maddy/Maddie but again not sure about Maddy May
Ava - love it
Evie - like it
Gracie - prefer Grace but don't dislike it
Darcy - ok
Willow - like it but depends on your other children's names
Bracken - like it but not sure I'd be brave enough to use it
Autumn - not my favourite and not sure it works with May
Ada - like but it sounds a bit old to me, Ava is better imo
Marcy - never heard this one but it's growing on me
Isabella (But would be called Bella)- I always think Isabella is a bit of a mouthful to say. Very pretty though and I love Issy/Izzy/ and Bella/Belle

If I had to pick one of yours it would be Ava but I don't hate any of them.

From other people's suggestions I like Elsa
Alice, Anna, Lydia, Harriet and Hannah.

How about Eva or Ella? Both similar in style to lots of yours and both work well with May as a middle name.

Good Luck.

Aviendha · 21/03/2010 16:37

Love Ada, its under used and stands the test of time. Can be spelt with a h on the end but then you loose the reversability

In fact its the only one I like from your list

AnnieBeansMum · 22/03/2010 21:57

I think Isabella May sounds beautiful.

Whatever you do, please do not name her Autumn. Speaking as a Summer, the season names are horrible when you are a child and the teasing is constant. Please, please don't.

MrsPixie · 22/03/2010 22:05

I love Autumn but it doesn't go with May

What about Emma
