What do you think?#
I like Bella and Donna as nicknames. Do you think the 'Donna' part is too dated?

no

kittywise · 19/03/2010 22:14

how about hemlock, henbane and wormwood

thumbwitch · 19/03/2010 22:14

not a great name really, given the associations, unless you are Italian and using it to mean "beautiful lady" - and even then it's still not a great name.

LOL at Rasputin liking it! oh the irony...

Those are just silly suggestions, Kittywise.

I see the datedness of Donna won't be the only downside of the name for some people.

No.

It is a poisonous plant.

Isabella is very pretty, or Donatella if you want to go Italian. (Although folk will think that you named your DD after Donatella Versace)

MrsPixie · 19/03/2010 22:18

I don't know why I know this but it is the name of a porn star, a really awfully extreme porn star. It stuck in my head when I heard it. Not a great name.

tummytickler · 19/03/2010 22:19

This was a name I would have liked had I had a baby at 15.

louisiaria · 19/03/2010 22:20

Lots of the popular plant names are poisonous (think about it). And 'poison' Ivy.

rose
violet
lily

poisonous?

SusieCarmichael · 19/03/2010 22:25

i think the donna part is a bit dated tbh

antoinettechigur · 19/03/2010 22:25

When I hear "Belladonna" I think "poison", not "person" or "baby".

Is this to do with the rise in vampire films etc? It sounds like somthing you would call a cartoon character.

What if she wanted to go to Italy "Ciao, I am Beautiful Lady.."

CaroJo · 19/03/2010 22:33

LOL, you can't be serious...

thumbwitch · 19/03/2010 22:33

the difference between belladonna and e.g. poison ivy is that belladonna historically has been used to actively poison people - haven't heard of anyone being poisoned by e.g. lily bulbs (which are toxic if eaten).

If you were to use a name that has association with murderous intent, then Amanita is prettier than Belladonna anyway, imo.

Maggie00 · 19/03/2010 22:50

I like it but it's a poison! might be a good name for a pet though.

Maggie00 · 19/03/2010 22:52

a pet rat. that's who it would be perfect for.

it's like Rubella. It's a shame really.

GrimmaTheNome · 19/03/2010 22:53

I was thinking only the other evening that Belladonna would be a good spoof baby name thread

minxofmancunia · 19/03/2010 23:12

or after a ninja turtle mmelindt

op, surely a wind up?

Katey1010 · 20/03/2010 01:06

It's called Belladonna because women used to put it in their eyes to make their pupils bigger and therefore more beautiful (actually because big pupils make you look sexually excited).

louisiaria · 20/03/2010 01:19

I do have Italian ancestry, that was part of the attraction.
I knew about the nightshade, but didn't think it would get such strong negative reactions.

Will think again, thanks for the opinions.
