I'm really stuck with boy's names and was wondering what you thought of Kip?

I also like Ned and kind of like Rafferty, although not too sure about the shortening Raff. Again, also like Barnaby, but don't like the shortening Barney!

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!!

Ned is truly awful - in Scotland it is the word for 'chav' I have to warn you of that.

Kip sounds like a dog's name to me but Rafferty is nice...

chimchar · 19/03/2010 10:10

i love it, but would prefer it if it was a shortened form of a longer name...i have no idea why though!

SoupDragon · 19/03/2010 10:11

Dreadful.

Kit as a shortening of Christopher is better.

irisblue · 19/03/2010 10:12

Ha ha! I know that about Ned, but as we don't live in Scotland, I don't think it's a problem...

I would also like the names to be shortenings of longer names (Ned would be Edward - so if he did ever move to Glasgow he could change his name!) and can't think of what Kip could be a shortening for..

Any other suggestions would be very welcome!

It means chicken in dutch and is the unit of currency in Loas.

Cadelaide · 19/03/2010 10:15

well I like it.

blogpage · 19/03/2010 10:21

Kip means sleep. Zzzzzzzzzz

diddl · 19/03/2010 10:28

Like Ned & Barnaby.
Prefer Raphael to Rafferty.

I wouldn´t discount a name because I didn´t like the short version tbh.

Call them the full name-problem solved!

BessieBoots · 19/03/2010 10:30

Kip is a brilliant name.

kiwichika · 19/03/2010 19:42

I quite like Kip. I think its a variation on Kipp which is old english meaning poited hill.
It could be short for Kipling, Kipton, Skipper, Kiply or Kipper!!

jollydiane · 19/03/2010 19:57

I am not loving Kip. It is also a name featured in the Oxford learning tree books which you will know all out when you DS gets to primary school

weasle · 19/03/2010 20:03

I knew a lovely Kip which was short for Kieran. I always thought it was lovely.

JoeyBettany · 19/03/2010 20:05

Lovely, with siblings Biff and Chip

Kip is really rubbish (sorry), Kit is ok though.

Maggie00 · 19/03/2010 20:42

Isn't a kip a dirty mess!????? I'm thinking of the kitchen in witnail and I. That is a kip.

Kit short for Christopher is much nicer.

Kit is better than Kip.

I would think of a short sleep for kip.

Lovethesea · 19/03/2010 21:01

There are children's books about a sheepdog called Kip .. that's what came to mind!

JuneMammy · 19/03/2010 23:30

I don't like kip at all! It's slang for a short snap or sleep "im trying to get some kip.." but is also used a lot in Ireland to refer to a horrible grubby dirty lodging! Check out:
www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-kip1.htm
(though the boys name Kip is also thought to come from Kipp (pointed Hill).

How about Pip instead? Not far off, derived from Philip i think..

Rafferty is cute, but the shortened versions are not so much!

displayuntilbestbefore · 19/03/2010 23:33

Kip is quite a nice sounding name but in reality I would expect anyone named Kip to slap their thigh a lot and laugh in an overly loud manner while rustling up a doorstop sandwich from the tuckbox Mother sent him to school with

nooka · 20/03/2010 06:05

I had a work colleague who called their ds Kip. Everyone was a bit about it because it really doesn't sound like a proper name, but a nickname. It's a nice enough nickname, although woudl make me think of sheepdogs, but really not good as a proper name. I like Barnaby, and Kit is great for Christopher.

MamaG · 20/03/2010 06:10

Agree re Christopher/Kit

jasper · 20/03/2010 06:24

cute

daisystone · 20/03/2010 08:50

I new a Kip at school. He was very cool - so by association I think it is a very cool name.
